The FMB is the UK's largest trade association in the building industry, with national offices in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, supported by additional regional offices. Established in 1941 to protect the interests of small and medium-sized building firms, the FMB is independent and non-profit-making, lobbying continuously for members’ interests at both national and local levels.

The FMB is a source of knowledge, professional advice and support for its members, providing a range of modern and relevant business building services to save them time and money.

  • An FMB member company will have signed up to the FMB Code of Practice and agreed to abide by the Disputes Resolution and Complaints procedures
  • Verified that they have no undischarged bankruptcies or relevant and outstanding court judgements and provided two references, one client reference (preferably from a work in progress) and one professional reference
  • All FMB member companies will have to undergo an inspection of a job in progress and confirmed their business address/details

Affiliate Members

FMB Affiliate logo

  • An FMB Affiliate company is one that has been trading for fewer than twelve months but has public liability insurance and/or employee liability insurance if applicable.

  • References for jobs completed are submitted on an on-going basis in the first year to ensure client satisfaction as the FMB Affiliate company strives to achieve full FMB membership status.

  • At the end of the membership period references are reviewed to ensure the FMB Affiliate company meets the standards expected of an FMB member before being allowed to apply for full FMB membership.

Associate Members

An increasing number of manufacturers and suppliers want to reach small and medium sized building firms, which can be particularly difficult to engage with. The FMB is very well placed to be of assistance to these companies via the Associate Membership scheme.
