Restoration of 16th century timber framed house

Exterior shot

This fascinating listed house dates from 1580, but modern finishes such as rendering applied in 1930s had caused severe damage and rotting to timbers and the wattle and daub.

The builder recovered the original timbers by pairing back to sound wood then splicing new oak to the originals by pegging.

While stripping off the old render, the builders found the old priest hole and an original 424-year-old window.

The builders also built a sympathetic small extension to the rear of the property and lime washed the exterior.

What the customer said:

"The builders were first class. The father of the family builder was in his seventies but was on site early every day."

What the Master Builder of the Year judges said:

"With the timber repairs, the structural reinstatement plus the modern extension, this project is superb. The work is unique and a valuable asset both for the owners and historians. This is top work by a qualified, experienced builder with a genuine interest in the final job."
