Rebuilding of the economic success of the UK

So, we now have a coalition Government but we still don’t know what the construction industry and small businesses might expect.

Small businesses are the lifeblood of this country and whatever happens, we must have stability to ensure economic recovery and growth. Recent research carried out on behalf of the Forum of Private Business found that almost three quarters (70 percent) of small business owners were already finding it difficult to plan for the rest of this year even before the election result.

The FMB’s policy programme (Building for Success: A Programme for the 2010 Parliament) is focused on three key themes to help the UK weather the current economic storm and create the conditions for long term success. First, is the need to improve and develop the skills base in the construction sector; secondly, the need for a series of measures to promote a greener more sustainable built environment; and thirdly, the need to create an environment in which small building fims can thrive and prosper and play their part in rebuilding the economic success of the UK.

One More thing

I spent an eye-opening day recently at the Leeds College of Building. It’s the only specialist further education construction college in the country and caters for around 10,000 students. I’d done a bit of research before I went and read about the courses students can take, but nothing prepared me for the bright-eyed enthusiasm of students and tutors alike. A full report will appear in the next issue of Master Builder.
