Nicky Rogers - Master Builder Editor
Nicky Rogers - Master Builder Editor

FMB partner, Travis Perkins is sponsoring a series of ecoSHOWCASE Construction Roadshows. Designed for specifiers and buyers, the events are held at premier venues around the UK and provide exhibitions of sustainable products and solutions for the entire construction process, from the ground up. Each event is complemented by a series of authoritative educational seminars, focusing on key sustainability issues, government directives and legislation.

The seminar program, which consists of three half-hour sessions covers topics such as: Managing Environmental Risk on Site, The Low Carbon Debate and The Green Deal.

Paul Joyner, Director of Sustainable Building Solutions at Travis Perkins Group said: "This is a great opportunity for us to engage with specifiers and show how we can help them meet the needs of regulations simply and cost effectively through innovative technical product and solutions support, whether it’s new build or retrofit. We will have some very exciting market-leading solutions to announce that you wouldn’t normally be able to access from a merchant."

The autumn events will begin at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium on 22 September, then move on to Birmingham 11 October, Cardiff 18 October, Luton 8 November, Southampton 16 November and Doncaster on 29 November. A full program of 13 events for 2012 will be announced soon.

NRWB

In this issue you will find a section specifically tailored to warranty and this is because we want to tell you what NRWB has been doing to bring even more insurance backed products to the market place.

The pull-out describes;

  • A new MasterBond product

  • A weather event solution to save you money, and

  • A new product which seeks to protect your insurance excess if you have to make a claim.

All these new products support NRWB’s business plan which promotes diversification into other areas of insurance expertise. It is hoped that NRWB will be the broker of choice for FMB members who derive substantial discounts from these insurances.

ONE MORE THING

1940s & 1950s House Explained
Part 1

I have come across the most wonderful set of books about British houses. Starting with The Tudor period, this series by Trevor Yorke is spellbinding. Each era has its own book but I’m particularly taken with the one called: ‘The 1940s and 1950s House Explained’ which whizzed me back to the world of Marley tiles on the floor (black ones in the case of my mother’s hall I remember!), Formica worktops (hers were bright orange) and coloured bathroom suites (mint green/ low level flush). Many of the houses built in the 40s and 50s were built to replace bomb-damaged properties, and aside from the nostalgia, these books dig much deeper to provide information on the actual structure and design of buildings and how the style of domestic buildings evolved. There’s a fascinating chapter on prefabs, apparently because they were so expensive, only 150,000 were ever built but amazingly, some still exist in Birmingham.

The pictures and diagrams in these books are superb and at £6.99 each they are a steal - Visit www.countrysidebooks.co.uk.

Brickwork, Concrete & Masonry
Part 2

Talking of books, FMB member Nicky Mears of J. Mears Ltd in Norfolk inherited a set of 33 books from his grandfather which were first published in 1930. Called "Brickwork, Concrete and Masonry", there should be 34 in the set BUT Nicky is missing number 21. Has anyone got a copy? Please email me at nickyr@warnersgroup.co.uk if you can help.
