You can’t have failed to have heard about this year’s WorldSkills competition. It’s the largest ever international skills competition and it’s taking place in London this month.
From 5 to 8 October 2011, the cream of the UK’s young construction talent will pour into the ExCeL Centre in London’s Docklands to compete in a series of gruelling trade challenges against the best in the world.
It is hugely important the UK construction industry is well represented at this global competition. Construction is a significant sector in the global economy, but it requires a workforce with the right skills to stay competitive. The competition will help to raise awareness of the importance of vocational skills to economic growth, and everyone involved will be doing their bit to help inspire young people to learn skills that will help them pursue a career they are passionate about.
Of course, the best inspiration comes from those who have already made a flying start to their career, which is why the CCATF continues to support the awards and competitions that showcase the very best in the industry.
Joe Price is one of the 43 members of Team UK who has undoubtedly made an impressive start to his career. With the help of his employer, FMB member company J R Slee, Joe started as an apprentice in 2008 and has since achieved NVQ Level 3 in site carpentry with distinction. Joe, 20, from Telford will be representing the UK in carpentry this month, and if that wasn’t enough, he has also recently won Advanced Apprentice of the Year at the National Apprenticeship Awards!
Joe joins 1,000 other young competitors from more than 50 countries and regions who will compete in 46 different skills competitions. Make sure you come to WorldSkills London 2011, at the ExCeL Centre, on the 5 to 8 October to support Joe and the other UK competitors and visit the FMB (at stand 355).
