Last month’s FMB Training article ‘Empowering Women in Construction’ has sparked quite a bit of interest amongst members of both genders! The article outlined the content and aims of FMB’s ‘Women Leaders in Construction’ course, which is funded by ConstructionSkills and enables women working within FMB member firms to achieve an Institute of Leadership and Management Diploma.
Among other things the course covers topics such as:
- Leadership and confidence
- Making and impact with presentations
- Performance management and
- Handling difficult people.
The course aims to develop the women working within member firms to help them achieve their full potential, which can only have a positive impact on the business productivity. We have two further ‘Women Leaders in Construction’ courses starting on 18 January 2012 – in London and on 2 February 2012 near Bridgend in South Wales.
The course costs just £220 + VAT, and requires commitment to attend eight, one-day workshops (one a month for eight months). This training is supported by funding from ConstructionSkills. TRAINING TO GROW YOUR BUSINESS
FMB ran ‘Success through Service’ courses around the UK last autumn, giving members the skills they need to stand out from the crowd in today’s competitive market for small builders, and to make sure they get those all important recommendations.
FMB used experience of the challenges that we know members can encounter when dealing with clients, combined with best practice and the latest thinking on customer service, to produce a unique two-day course. This also included one-to one coaching from our expert trainers, which gave an opportunity to get advice on customer service issues specific to each business. A toolkit of checklists and documents to take away was included for members to adapt for their own use. The development of this course was funded by ConstructionSkills Management and Supervisory Development Fund.
The trainers who delivered the courses for us, Esteem Ltd, have collected feedback from members who participated in this training, and we are grateful to members for sharing their opinions, which helps us adapt and develop the content further.
FMB Member Bryan Hindle of ‘Preservation Expert’, posted the following comments about the course on his blog (which you can find at www.preservationexpert.co.uk)
“These are hard times in the construction industry and so many guys in microbusinesses as well as bigger ones are finding the commercial landscape harder to navigate through. The FMB has really hit the spot in developing these kinds of approaches, because whilst so many members are superbly skilled in their day to day work, they’ve often had little (if any) management and business development training. I’m convinced that offering this type of training to as many FMB members as possible is the way to drive more members to success.”

We now hope to gain further funding from ConstructionSkills to enable more members to benefit from this programme – watch this space for further training offers from FMB in 2012.
