Case Studies

Anstey Leicestershire


This project involved the renovation and extension of an existing family home which was first constructed in the 1930s. The extensions were equal in size (100m2) to the existing large building. The challenge on this project was to seamlessly integrated the environmental aspects of the build, some modern, some traditional, without compromising the chartist presence of the building.

Major structural works were carried out to the existing structure with the removal of three quarters of the back elevation and one large opening to side elevation to the first floor. We also removed the entire existing ground floor slab to incorporate an entire new underfloor heating system which distributes heat more evenly throughout the home. In addition, the insulation to the existing structure was dramatically upgraded to achieve consistency throughout the building. The removal of internal walls also allowed a more modern and open plan configuration to the internal layout to be achieved.  

The extensions internal structural shell and roof structure was completed using Kingspans Structurally Insulated Panels which included glulam beams to form the structural support for both the ridge and hips which allowed a large open vaulted ceiling incorporating 5 large Velux windows which made best use of natural light, maximizing solar gain to the rear upper floor and ground floor rear living space. With open web Posi Joists supporting the upper first floor also made installing the services less demanding and more time efficient.

The whole shell for this project was manufactured off-site and delivered in three timed stages, erected and rapped in a waterproof, breathable membrane within a remarkable 5 working day period. This meant we had a water tight structure after just one week which allowed work to commence simultaneously to the outside envelope which consisted of carefully selected handmade clay facing bricks to match seamlessly to the excising house and rendered block work whilst our tradesman worked inside installing first fix electrics and plumbing closely followed by our dry-liners and plasters. 

The ground floor was insulated and underfloor heating pipes were laid before we used a eco-friendly Supaflo® floor screed applied in one application. The 2 large aluminum bi-fold doors were fitted into the rear of the property along with new ‘A Rated’ energy saving double glassed windows throughout the whole property. New hardwood oak flooring was laid to the whole ground floor along with new doors, linnings, skirting and architrave throughout gave the house a brand new feel.

New Build Bungalow


We were please to be the chosen principle contractor in 2009 for this 4 bedroom dormer bungalow on a strip of land, located within a quite residential area. The initial plans were for a 3 bedroom bungalow with internal garage due to a restrictive covenant on the site. One of the stand out achievements of the project was the positive relationships that we built with local residents which contributed towards the successful application for the covenant being lifted. This allowed further amendments to the initial plans. The architect skillfully negotiated the inclusion a dormer to the front elevation and 3 large Velux windows on the rear. This allowed a large fourth master bedroom with on-suite within the roof space. Working directly under the architects instructions we initiated the changes, whilst still keeping within the time allowed in the short contract period.

This new dwelling was for an expatriate family planing to return to the area after spending many years living abroad. The short contract period which requiring a fast build with no time for over-run whilst incorporating all the environmental aspects was both challenging and rewarding for our whole team.

With a strong emphasis on reducing future energy demand we worked closely with the architect incorporating the best use of energy saving materials and devices throughout the whole home. The high insulation specification for this project far exceeded the requirements at that present time of construction and would still go beyond current Building Regulations required standards of 2014. This foresight by both the client and architect ensured that the overall ‘life term’ space heating cost is kept to a minimum. We installed a wet, underfloor, fast delivery, space heating system throughout the whole home, which ensures adequate heating levels are evenly distributed.

Installing water efficient devices such as water saving showers and taps makes efficient use of both heated water and fresh mains water while dual flush toilets which uses water harvested from the roof, diverted into a large filtered underground storage tank, before returning to the home and used for flushing and most purposes other than drinking helps to reduce the demand of incoming mains water. Along with low energy lighting throughout, the total future running cost of this home is substantially reduced, insulating against utility price rises not just up to present time, but well into the future.
