Small Parcels of Land Can Help Solve London’s Housing Crisis, says Federation of Master Builders

Friday 22nd October 2010 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

London Mayor, Boris Johnson’s decision to create a Task Force to create more affordable homes in London is a great initiative at a time when there is serious under supply of affordable homes, says the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).

Brian Berry, Director of External Affairs at the FMB said:

“After the depressing announcement in the Comprehensive Spending Review to cut the social housing budget it is a tremendous boost to know that the London Mayor is serious about tackling the acute housing shortage in London. Everyone should have the right to an affordable decent home but the London Assembly needs to be more creative about using the limited resources available.”

Berry concluded:

“Reusing small empty sites of up to two hectares could more than meet the UK’s housing demand without building on green field land. Small available sites of under two hectares within built up areas are rarely counted and micro-sites of half an acre of less are literally too numerous to count. In inner London, where population density is highest and land scarcest, there are enough micro-sites to supply all the new homes we need.”
