Small Building Companies in Scotland Suffer Another Decline

THURSDAY 7th JULY 2011 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Small building companies in Scotland suffered another decline in conditions during the second Quarter of 2011 according to the latest State of Trade Survey from the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), the largest trade association in the UK construction industry.

The Quarter two 2011 results for the FMB’s State of Trade Survey, the only survey of small and medium sized building companies, show that conditions in the Scottish SME construction sector have improved since the first quarter but remain negative overall.

Grahame Barn, Director of FMB Scotland, said:

“Although conditions are not as bad as they were in the first quarter of this year, they are still heavily negative suggesting that small builders in Scotland are continuing to struggle.”

Barn continued:

“The Scottish construction SME sector improved in the second quarter and saw the least negative conditions since the third quarter of last year. Around 22% of responses were positive, compared with 18% three months ago. However 45% were negative and this is where we get the heavily negative overall picture from.”

Barn Concluded

“The key to turning these results around and to creating growth, jobs and apprenticeships in our economy is to ensure that public sector construction spend is evenly spread so that the effects of the limited funds we have available are not all concentrated in a very small area.”
