The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) welcomes the recent sentencing of a cowboy builder from Buckinghamshire to 15 months imprisonment for swindling a client in North London. This comes at a time of increasing complaints against rogue traders.
The cowboy builder, of High Wycombe, promised his client to repair a leaking roof for £3,000. The work was said to be carried-out and the customer paid the fee, only to find a few days later that water was leaking through the ceiling of an upstairs bedroom. On trying to contact the builder, it was found that his contact details were a PO box number and he was untraceable, and it took the Police a year to track him down.
The FMB shares the public concerns over the number of complaints about cowboy builders who severely damage the reputation of the many reputable builders who rely on recommendations from satisfied clients for future work. It can also deter homeowners from having work carried out on their property.
John Turner, Southern Counties Regional Director of the FMB, commented
"The sentencing of rogue traders is to be applauded, although it would act as a stronger deterrent if penalties were tougher. Consumers should always use a member of a recognised trade association who also provide an insurance-backed warranty, such as the FMB's MasterBond, and check with that organisation to confirm their membership."
