Even though this year's National Construction Week ended on October 10, The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) said today that it's not the end of the story as far as they are concerned! The Federation announced that, along with National Construction Week (NCW) and the CITB, they are offering half price vouchers to Diggerland, the unique Adventure Park that focuses on the fascination that children (and some parents!) have with mechanical diggers.
Said FMB's Director of Membership Services, Robin Hood-Leeder:
"I produced a brickwork course for a north London school recently and the letters I received from the children clearly demonstrated that their negative preconceptions of the construction industry can be changed.
We are therefore delighted that this year's National Construction Week has been the most successful yet, involving children at over 1000 events around the country. Diggerland can make a valuable contribution by helping to keep this interest alive all year round, offering children the unprecedented opportunity to operate construction plant in a safe environment. It is particularly interesting that equal numbers of girls and boys visit Diggerland. Our own research indicates that by the age of 10, less than 40% of boys would be interested in a career in construction, while only 10% of girls see it as a possible career option."
The English and Welsh Ministers for Education and Lifelong Learning have been keynote speakers at our annual conferences, as we continue to push home to government the importance of youngsters having a greater awareness of the options open to them and for them to be given the opportunity to gain experience of "non-academic" careers from an early age."
National Construction Week is a UK-wide campaign to promote careers in the construction industry to young people. It is managed by the CITB in partnership with the industry. This year National Construction Week was from 3 to 10 October 2002.
