The Search Is On For Britain's Best Builder

The Federation of Master Builders is challenging the perception of the bad builder by calling on the industry's customers and professional advisers to highlight good workmanship, value for money and reliability.

The FMB has launched the 1998 Master Builder of the Year scheme in association with Jewson, the timber and builder's merchant.

Satisfied clients and their professional advisers are being invited to single out builders who are considered to have undertaken outstanding work in new build, (including housing) and refurbishment. Each category has been split into projects valued at less than and over £100,000 per project, excluding VAT.

Quality of workmanship, completion on time and within budget, plus a willing attitude, will all score highly with the award judges in selecting the winning firms.

Ian Davis, FMB Director General commented:

"We are only too aware that our image among the general public is not what it might be, and we welcomed the recent Joseph Rowntree Foundation report that highlighted fears over costs and cowboy operators in the housing repairs sector. But the reality is that most builders are highly competent skilled craftsmen.

"Construction activity is a major contributor to the British economy. With an output of over £50 billion a year, this is almost 8% of GDP. Undoubtedly the sector, which employs a million and half people, can deliver - this is the clear message we want to communicate through the Master Builder of the Year scheme."

Customers, clients and their professional advisers are all invited to nominate their favourite builder. Nomination Forms are available from the FMB by calling free on 0800 328 2142. Copies can also be obtained at any of the 400 Jewson and Harcros branches throughout Britain.
