There's not a cowboy on the horizon when Britain's best builders Neville Theobald and Bob Hunt are on the job. The highly-skilled builders from Suffolk have won 'The Master Builder of the Year 1998' accolade, the annual competition run by the Federation of Master Builders.
Ellisdale was judged to have the highest standards of workmanship, awareness of time and budget restrictions, and can-do attitude. The winning project was a new four-bedroom house in Stoke by Clare, a village 15 miles south-east of Cambridge.
The award is not a pat on the back from the building industry. The hundreds of builders entered were all nominated by customers satisfied with their work.
Ian Davis, the FMB's Director General, said:
"The many hundreds of customers who entered their favourite builders into this competition would certainly disagree with the 'cowboy' image some operators in the building industry seem to keep alive. The reality is that most builders are highly skilled and reliable craftsmen.
"Construction activity is a major contributor to the British economy. With an annual output of more than £50 billion, this is almost 8% of the GDP. Undoubtedly the sector, which employs 1.5 million people, can deliver - this is the clear message we want to communicate through the Master Builder of the Year competition."
The four 'Master Builder of the Year' category winners are:
New building, costing more than £100,00 (ex. VAT)
Ellisdale Builders, Sudbury, Suffolk
New building, costing less than £100,00 (ex. VAT)
