In another move to help defeat cowboy builders, the FMB has joined in discussions with other leading industry organisations, including NHBC, CIC and TGWU, to explore the possibilities for improving domestic consumer protection.
The meeting, held on 4th November 1997, was hosted by NHBC and the FMB contributed its considerable experience as the leading trade association in the building industry.
Ian Davis, FMB's Director General, said:
"The FMB has been in the vanguard of the fight against rogue traders for many years and welcomes the new initiative and the contribution it can make to improving consumer protection."
"We believe the problem can be best tackled by a three point plan involving an approval scheme for builders, insurance backed warranty protection, and a reduction in VAT to remove the unfair advantage that 'rogue traders' enjoy."
Ian Davis confirmed that BATJIC (Building and Allied Trades Joint Industrial Council), a joint negotiating body with the TGWU, supported the principle of trying to achieve better protection for consumers.
