The Federation of Master Builders, (FMB), which represents 15,000 small to medium sized building firms, welcomes the Consultation Paper published today by the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions, (DETR), on potential ways and means to combat 'Cowboy' builders.
FMB will be responding positively to DETR especially to expand on the proposals to introduce formal quality accreditation of builders and particularly on the role for insurance backed warranties. FMB has led the way on this form of consumer protection since 1981 through its subsidiary, National Register of Warranted Builders.
Ian Davis, FMB's Director General, said:
"FMB will give detailed consideration to all ten proposals in the consultation document. But in any event we are convinced that these pave the way for Trade Associations to enhance self-regulation and this will be given top priority by the Federation's members. Our sole aim is to deliver quality and upgrade consumer protection and we are eager to enter into a dialogue with DETR to bring this about."
