Owners of Gloucestershire building firm, SHB Loft Conversions have been prosecuted for misleading clients by claiming false membership of the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).
The FMB's South West regional complaints committee received a complaint from a customer, who had employed SHB Loft Conversions and reported poor workmanship. The FMB immediately informed Gloucester Trading Standards of the firm's false claims.
Jeremy Chapman, FMB South West regional director said: "SHB Loft Conversions were not and have never been a member of the FMB. The FMB rigorously protects the use of its logo and works closely with Trading Standards officers throughout the country to protect householders against rogues and criminals masquerading as professional traders. Our logo is widely accepted as 'The sign of building quality'. To check a member or to 'Find A Builder' from amongst our 13,000 vetted members, consumers can either call us or visit our website at www.findabuilder.co.uk".
Scott and Peter Leppier appeared before Gloucester Magistrates' Court and pleaded guilty to the charges made against them. Both were fined £1,000 and ordered to pay costs of £900.
