The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) is leading a health and safety drive by joining forces with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and major contractors in the Construction Health and Safety Initiative. The initiative aims to provide information and awareness on health and safety in the construction industry. The next event, 'Help for the industry from the industry', will take place on October 2nd at Haydock Park Racecourse and has attracted 200 delegates from small and medium sized building companies.
"This industry's record on health and safety needs improving. It's important to carry the correct message on safe working practice across the industry. Awareness and education play a key role and the Health and Safety Initiative has proved to be of great benefit to construction companies for teaching new skills and updating regulations."
Delegates will hear a presentation from Ian Whittingham, an accident victim who is paralysed from the waist down after falling from a roof.
Mark Clarke from Cheshire-based building and civil engineering contractors, Clarke (Construction) Ltd said:
"With ever tighter deadlines and increasing pressure to deliver, the construction industry must continue to focus on reducing the fatalities and accidents suffered each year."
The programme incorporates presentations about asbestos, risk assessment - including manual handling, working at heights and noise.
The FMB is organising similar initiatives in York, Hull, Nottingham, Carlisle, Newcastle, Bristol, London, East Anglia and Kent.
