A new initiative aimed at combating the cowboy builder has been launched in the form of a building information centre situated in a prime site in Neath's town centre.
Members of the public can find out how to choose a reputable builder and the advantages of taking out an insurance backed warranty should problems occur. This is believed to be a first for the building industry.
The centre is situated at 7 Old Market Street, Neath and run by the Federation of Master Builders and FMB member Mark Thomas of MS Thomas Building Contractors.
The reason for the initiative is to promote the construction industry to the general public in the light of the number of programmes depicting the negative side of the industry in recent months.
Visitors to the centre will be able to discuss with members of staff their building needs, how to find a reputable builder for their project and details of the FMB insurance-backed warranty, MasterBond.
Geoff Bridgeman, Regional Director for the FMB in Wales, commented:
"The prime site location of the centre means that the public can walk in and ask for information instead of taking 'pot luck' and picking a contractor from the phone book.
"It has always been one of my prime concerns that we must educate the general public in the way they appoint a contractor, and also make them aware that there is an insurance backed warranty scheme to protect them in the event of any problems arising."
