The Federation of Master Builders has successfully prosecuted a builder for fraudulently claiming to be a FMB member.
Cardiff-based Paul Haslam Building Services had let his FMB membership lapse in 1990. However, he had continued to advertise in the Cardiff Thomson Local Directory using the FMB logo. In total he had three separate advertisements bearing the logo.
He was found guilty on all three counts and fined a total of £1,560.00.
Geoff Bridgeman, Regional Director of the FMB Wales region said:
"We had alerted Trading Standards after checking the local Yellow Pages and Thomson Directories for any fraudulent use of the FMB logo. At the Federation we work hard to assure high membership standards and the FMB logo is seen by customers to be a hallmark of professionalism and competence. I hope that this prosecution gives a strong warning to non-members trying to fraudulently cash-in on the credibility of FMB membership. We take such fraudulent use of the FMB logo very seriously and will not hesitate to prosecute any builder found to be carrying out such misrepresentation."
