The award acknowledges outstanding work and helps to highlight the importance of apprentices to the future of the industry. Nicky Rogers of Master Builder magazine got in touch with Mark to ask him about his career so far.
Mark decided to embark on a career in construction while he was still at school. He took part in Glasgow’s School Vocational Programme and went to the Queenslie Training Centre just half a day a week, and tried a variety of trades until he settled on carpentry and joinery.
Mark explained: "It wasn’t until I actually started to work with timber that I realised how it could be used to make things with real architectural beauty, like doors, windows, skirtings and mouldings, etc. Really, I was drawn to the trade because of the amount of pride and job satisfaction I got from people admiring my work."
Mark was accepted for an apprenticeship in his chosen trade with City Building (Glasgow) LLP. Mark is highly motivated and works incredibly hard and has this to say about his employer and the help he gets: "My employer has been very kind to me, providing excellent training facilities all the way through my apprenticeship, which has given me the opportunity of further education. My employer’s complete support and guidance has motivated me to perform to the very best of my ability."
City Building Development Manager Gavin Hay said of Mark: "Mark is quite imposing in stature, but mild mannered. All his work is first class, he is consistent and reliable, but modest and gets on well with everyone he comes in contact with.
"Mark is very articulate for his age and mature in terms of his career development. I put his success down to the fact that if he doesn’t know something he asks or finds out. That way in time he’ll be well on the way to knowing it all!"
In the four years since Mark started his apprenticeship, he has demonstrated outstanding dedication and commitment to learning, and his quality of work has been excellent. He achieved an SVQ Level 3 and Advanced Craft qualification in Carpentry and Joinery and is now in his second year of a Construction Management HNC.
