MAF Design and Build is a well-established building company in Bury, Lancashire. MAF proprietor, Chris Maffei, has worked in the construction industry for 30 years, beginning by buying and renovating properties himself.
He joined the FMB about six years ago, and says: "I had read some information about the Federation that sounded interesting, so I did some more research, and afterwards felt that it was the best way for a small builder to find out things within the industry."
He feels membership has had a hugely positive impact on his business: in fact he reckons that he uses FMB services more or less on a daily basis. With the advice and help he has been given, he has been able to grow his business. Four years ago he employed four people, he now employs twenty.
Chris says: "As our company is growing we are finding ourselves using the FMB member services more and more."
Benefits of membership
Nicky asked Chris what he thought was the most valuable benefit of FMB membership, he said: "As MAF is growing we are finding ourselves using the FMB member services more and more. Legal advice, health and safety courses, first aid courses, exhibitions, not to mention social events, regional council meetings, and general networking with other likeminded builders, the list really is endless."
"For the second year running I am proud to say that I have been elected President of the Oldham branch of the FMB."
The next generation
Chris has a son (Christopher) who has recently joined the business. In the short time since he left university, Christopher has worked hard and it seems as if he has a bright future in the industry. Nicky asked Chris to explain a bit more. "When Christopher went to university, we never thought he would be interested in becoming part of the business."
"He was away for four years, and when he came home he saw that MAF Design and Build concentrated mainly on large building projects. He noticed that we were not catering enough for clients requiring small works, and seeing the gap in the market, he felt there was an opportunity for a service that is now known as HandyMAF. "He’ll carry out a survey in the morning, drop an estimate off in the evening, and get the job done the next day."More...
