Frequently Asked Questions

Who can nominate or be nominated?

Due to the nature of the questions for project categories, which require details on the build process, it is recommended that Master Builder companies complete their own nominations for project categories and for the Building Company of the Year category. Any nominated projects must have been completed between 1 January 2019 and 1 January 2021 and all work must have been wholly completed by a Master Builder.

Nominations for Tradesperson of the Year and Apprentice of the Year can be made directly by clients, colleagues, fellow FMB members or training providers. However, the apprentice or tradesperson being nominated must have worked for a Master Builder company between 1 January 2019 and 1 January 2021.

Nominations for Building Company of the Year must highlight achievements and challenges that the company has faced between 1 January 2019 and 1 January 2021.

Do I need permission from a client / individual to enter the awards?

Yes. Members will need to secure permission from their clients to enter a project into the project categories as photos and information about the project may be publicised on the FMB website, social media channels and in the media. Please read the entry Terms and Conditions for more information.

If you would like to nominate a Master Builder for Tradesperson of the Year, or an apprentice for Apprentice of the Year, we encourage you to speak to the individual first. However, if you would like to submit a nomination as a surprise you may do so.

How much does it cost to enter the awards?

Unlike most award schemes, the Master Builder Awards are free to enter, but you must be a Master Builder company (or employed by a Master Builder company) to be eligible to participate. You must be a member at the time the nomination is submitted or are applying for membership and will have become a member before 31 January 2021. If you're not a member, you can start your application to become a Master Builder today.

Can my client nominate me?

Yes, your client can nominate you directly for the Tradesperson of the Year Award.

For project category nominations (such as Small Renovation Project) or Building Company of the Year, we recommend members complete their own nominations as these require more detailed information about the building process and/or business. However, clients can support these entries by preparing a testimonial.

Read our top five tips for preparing your nominations for guidance to help you draft your entries.

How many times can I nominate?

There is no limit to the number of nominations one Master Builder company can make. A project may be entered into more than one category (if applicable to the criteria for each category), but each entry must be accompanied by a separate nomination form.

Read our top five tips for preparing your nominations for guidance to help you draft your entries.

Can I enter a project into more than one category?

Yes. You can submit a single project for multiple categories, provided it meets the category criteria. For example, a new home may be eligible for the House Builder Award and the Kitchen Project category if a kitchen was part of the new build and was substantially completed by the Master Builder company rather than a separate installation company.

You will need to submit a separate nomination form for each unique project ─ you cannot nominate two separate projects in the same entry form.

I have typed in a company name on my nomination form and the company isn’t appearing. What do I do?

Your company and/or your builder (if you are a client submitting an entry) must be a member of the FMB to be able to submit a nomination. You can check if your builder is a member by typing their company name into our Find a Builder search. Double check you have entered the correct company name when completing the nomination form and try adding spaces (e.g. for ABC Building, try A B C Building). If the company name is still not appearing, please contact the membership team on 0330 333 7777 or by email at [email protected].

Can I save my nomination and come back to it?

Yes, you can save a draft nomination and return to it later if necessary. Members will need to log in to their member profile and non-members will need to log back in with the same details they registered with when starting a nomination. You can locate the nomination form by logging into the FMB website and selecting ‘My awards entries’.

Read our top five tips for preparing your nominations for guidance to help you draft your entries and plan ahead.

What is the deadline for nominations?

Nominations must be submitted online through the FMB website by Friday 15 January 2021.

Can I edit my nomination or fix a mistake after I submit it?

Yes. After you have submitted your nomination, you will still be able to make changes to your entry up until the deadline of 15 January 2021. To make edits, you will need to log back into the FMB website through your member log in or registration details and navigate to ‘My award entries’.

There is an issue with my nomination form. What do I do?

If you are experiencing any issues with completing a nomination through the FMB website, please email [email protected].

Can I submit my nomination via email?

No. Nominations can only be accepted via online submission through the FMB website. If you are experiencing any issues with submitting a nomination, please email [email protected]

Will I receive feedback on my nomination?

Due to the volume of entries received, it is not possible to provide feedback on individual nominations.

Who judges the Master Builder Awards?

The nominations are judged by independent judging panels at both a local and national level.

The first round of judging takes place at a local level to choose the category winners in each region and devolved nation. These winners are then shortlisted for the national awards, where an independent national judging panel will review the entries and select the winners.

When will winners be announced?

Winners across the regions and devolved nations will be announced at virtual award ceremonies that will take place in May and June 2021. National winners will be announced at an event on 24 September 2021. Click here for more details on the award ceremonies.

What do winners receive?

All winners across the regions and devolved nations will receive a trophy and regional winner logo to display. All national winners will receive a trophy and a national winner logo to display.

The overall national Master Builder of the Year award winner will also receive a brand new, yet-to-be-released model of an Isuzu D-Max Utah pick-up worth more than £36,000. The national winner of the Apprentice Award will receive a cheque for £500.
