Apprentice Award - Rodrigo McCafferty, H M Raitt & Sons Ltd (Scotland)

Rodrigo McCafferty’s employer H M Raitt & Sons recognised his exceptional dedication to learning his trade as a second year Apprentice in Joinery, and his enthusiasm for taking on new tasks. He possesses a natural ability with tools and an outstanding commitment to the job, demonstrated by his willingness to cycle from his home at 5.45am on dark, freezing Scottish mornings. H M Raitt & Sons believe him to be one of their very best apprentices and are proud of the way he has become a valuable member of the team whose services are requested frequently by their tradesmen on-site.

Bathroom Project - M C K Construction (Scotland)

This stunning bathroom project saw M C K Construction install an underfloor heating system to keep toes toasty on the fresh new tiles, whilst a skirted freestanding bath serves as a wonderful focal point, complete with wall-mounted lever shower. The continental shower features a swivel panel with a chrome Belgravia shower mixer and centrally fixed head, these are complemented by a wall-hung ceramic basin and traditional chrome mixer taps. A large, fitted mirror serves to bounce light around the room and make an already spacious bathroom seem even bigger, completing a wonderful space for the client to relax in.

Building Company of the Year - Haldane Construction Services Ltd (Scotland)

Following the death of Andrew Haldane, the company’s founder, leader and mentor, the Haldane Construction Services team has shown great strength, resilience and ambition to continue his legacy. The judges noted how, despite the significant loss, the company were still able to fulfil their client commitments, even when grappling with the impact of COVID-19. It is clear that “#TeamHaldane” have bonded together and that in their own words; “If we can get through last year, we can get through anything”. In the face of extreme challenge, they have maintained the highest level of professionalism and a genuinely welcoming attitude towards clients, combined with frequent, clear communication and support.

Commercial or Public Sector Project - George Fair Joiners & Contractors (Scotland)

George Fair Joiners & Contractors’ spectacular rejuvenation of these aged steadings structures into a modern wedding and events venue is one that impressed the judges both visually and technically. Beginning with only a few of the original walls intact, they exercised careful craftmanship in replicating the original mill building constructed more than a century ago. A great deal of attention to detail was also paid to satisfy the different roof sizing requirements across the various buildings, and the main function hall now features the first double hip-end scissor trusses in Scotland, measuring some 16m long.

The Andrew Haldane House Builder Award winner - H M Raitt & Sons Ltd (Scotland)

This new build on the site of a demolished piggery saw H M Raitt & Sons combine period and modern products to produce a comfortable family home sympathetic to its rural setting. Careful collaboration between the architect, engineers and the client ensured a smooth working process and effective, punctual delivery of works. Their client was delighted with the result, stating:

From start to finish HM Raitts provided a first-class service, responding to any queries promptly, keeping to timescales and also extremely considerate of our neighbours. The quality of workmanship was of the highest order and all staff members were a pleasure to work with and a credit to the company.”

Kitchen Project - Kevin Wilson Joiners and Building Contractors (Scotland)

This kitchen renovation project by Kevin Wilson Joiners and Building Contractors required the blocking and plastering-in of a window, before an existing doorway was also replaced. With the addition of bespoke kitchen units above the space and clever use of materials that saved their client more than £3,000, the kitchen now offers plenty of storage space and a fresh new look. The homeowners were pleased with this Master Builder’s efforts to make the most of their limited budget, stating: ‘Thank you, what you have helped us achieve is just outstanding quality and service, we are indebted to you.’

Large Renovation Project - Spey Building & Joinery Ltd (Scotland)

Set in the heart of the picturesque Cairngorms National Park, this refurbishment and extension of a traditional family home saw Spey Building & Joinery install extensive insulation measures and an air-source heat pump to keep their clients warm and comfortable and all seasons. The new extension is connected to the original house by a glazed link, which serves as the entrance for the house as well as facilitating stunning views of the Spey Valley to the North. The judges were impressed by the cantilever design and weightless appearance of the structure, describing the choice of materials and the workmanship on display as “exemplary”.

Medium Renovation Project - Coldwells Building Company Ltd (Scotland)

When Coldwells Building Company first encountered this property, they saw beyond the rundown assortment of croft structures initially constructed in 1869, to the potential for something truly special. Stripping out the old cottage and byre, they set about creating a spacious new home environment seamlessly blended with a modern extension made using timber and glass. During the process they inspected more than 30 roof rafters from the original structures, salvaging those in usable condition and treating them for woodworm before repurposing them in the new roof. The result is a stunning family home that combines modern amenities with genuine historic character.

Sustainability Award - Spey Building & Joinery Ltd (Scotland)

Undertaking the repurposing of this old packing shed into a creative design studio in a remote location, the team at Spey Building & Joinery lived locally throughout this project. Trips to the site were minimised to just one per week, and rather than demolishing the existing structure they instead repurposed it, which helped to reduce waste. Spey alternated between using birch-faced plywood and common house brick for the walls and flooring, which contrast well and provide a simple, yet effective and durable solution. The client stated: “Angus Reid-Evans, director of Spey Building & Joinery, is approachable, cheery and practical” and praised the team for bringing “friendliness and understanding” to the build.

Tradesperson of the Year - Ross Taylor of Fine Detail All Trades Ltd (Scotland)

As the effects of the pandemic began to be felt in the industry, Ross developed a plan to maintain and provide jobs for those already at Fine Detail Renovation, as well as for others who found themselves at a loose end. He has consistently maintained a focus on improving mental and physical wellbeing of the team and impressed the judges by displaying mature leadership qualities despite only being 25 years old. Following a recent emergency operation his first thoughts were of his team and the progression of works underway. Those colleagues rate him highly, stating: “We are proud of this young man and so should be our FMB community.”
