Winning Entries

Take a look at the winning entries form the South West, Midlands and Eastern counties and what our judges thought of them!

Small Renovation Projects

Eastern Winner: Swiss Build Ltd

small renovation

"Swiss Build certainly caught the eye of the judges with this entry. Completely remodelling these premises included fitting a full wall window to bring in much needed natural light.
Again, a tight deadline and a tight budget meant that Swiss Build also hand built the furniture units resulting in a clean, open Scandinavian feel for this winning project. Well done, Swiss Build!"

Midlands Winner: Newleaf Property Development and Maintenance Ltd

small renovation

New Leaf won the approval of the judges because the site was on a small footprint, with the brief of converting a run-down building into self-contained new accommodation... Newleaf achieved this, preserving the original features, resulting in the interior closely matching the outside appearance. Well done Newleaf, a deserved win.

South West Winner: Moon Developments Limited

small renovation

"The judges awarded Moon the winning prize for this regional category, showcasing this company’s craftmanship skills. The project was on a tight budget and needed a well-designed space which they judges felt was delivered with real style. Well done Moon, a well-deserved win!"

Medium Renovation Projects

Eastern Winner: R J Bacon Builders Ltd

medium renovation

"This project involved replacing an entire bay window with a new glass side extension overlooking the coast so wind and water considerations were vital. The original design was by a family member and R J Bacon translated this into the final design you see here. This included a glass surrounded living space with a balcony offering beautiful uninterrupted views across the estuary. The client was delighted with the great communication and working relationship and the judges were in agreement that this was a clear winner. Well done R J Bacon Builders Ltd!"

Midlands Winner: Steve Smith Construction Ltd

medium renovation

"This was an architect-designed project with some additional influence from Steve Smith Construction. Access was a real challenge with a shared passageway just 30 inches wide and the builders came across a main sewer that nobody had identified. As work progressed, Steve Smith Construction provided a temporary kitchen while the work on the sewer could be undertaken, which is a fantastic example of a FMB member going the extra mile."

South West Winner: McMurray & Martin Ltd

medium renovation

"This project executed by McMurray & Martin is an example of what can be done when the builder and the architect work as a team. This was again a bespoke project that threw up all kinds of challenges. The end result was however well worth it, offering a spacious and airy interior whilst giving consideration to the outward appearance with soft natural tones to complement the surroundings. Well done McMurray & Martin!"

Large Renovation

South West Winner: KPK Builders Ltd

large renovation

The South west judges were impressed at this complete renovation and refurbishment of a barn, creating a high quality home. To achieve this, the existing blockwork needed to be retained, with extensive planning and renovation required in order to achieve the desired effect. With a hardwood glazed screen requiring steels to support the roof, the overall result was a very impressive project, turning a utilitarian farm building into a high quality family home. Well done, KPK Builders!

Midlands Winner: Mister & Missus Ltd

large renovation

The judges were impressed by the meticulous attention to detail by this building company, bringing this classic building into the 21st century and yet retaining all the original features. In addition, this member excelled themselves in a thoroughly professional approach in their client relationship, excelling as an example of how a Master Builder manages their communication with their client. All in all, a very successfully managed project, delivering exactly what the client asked for and exceeding expectations. Well done, Mister & Missus!

Eastern Winner: R J Bacon Builders Ltd

large renovation

This time, the entry was for a striking art deco 1930’s building that was pretty much derelict and desperately in need of some very extensive renovation work. R J Bacon had a budget of £360k in which to fully upgrade this unique building to meet 21st century energy performance whilst working with a unique mix of design elements and materials. The resulting project has delivered a modern interior but retaining and enhancing the original design character both inside and outside the property.

Kitchen Projects

South West Winner: Maximum Traders (Bristol) Ltd

kitchen project

The South West judges were impressed at the quality of the finished project which was the product of close teamwork between client, architect and this Master Builder. Keeping close to the character of the existing house, this new kitchen was a completely new rear extension. During the build process, there was a significant design change requested and this was managed very effectively through the excellent relationship and teamwork between the three parties. Well done Maximum Traders for your fantastic work!

Midlands Winner: Steve Smith Construction Ltd

kitchen project

The amount of work that went on behind the scenes in this project was incredible. From an original architect design which had to be redesigned by this Master Builder, to the original building having no two angles the same, and an extension coming out of the corner of the house rather than the conventional back or side, as well as access issues. The resulting project has delivered a very modern kitchen area producing an outstanding home for the customer and their family to enjoy.
Well done Steve Smith Construction!

Eastern Winner: Brentwood Lofts Ltd

kitchen project

This was a complex project with a demanding brief, requiring attention to detail of the highest order. With severely restricted access and no possibility of using a crane, the project needed to successfully deliver an elegant re-modelling with an open plan kitchen and family room… Bespoke German kitchen, with bifold doors and velux windows creates a light and airy perspective with the use of modern materials and finish to an extremely high standard. Well done Brentwood Lofts for such a fantastic result!

Bathroom Projects

South West Winner: CHI Homes Ltd

bathroom project

This award-winning, elegant bathroom design encompasses a number of solutions as a result of planning restrictions such as limited ridge height, in this development of bespoke houses. What also swayed the judges was how CHI homes developed an excellent relationship with neighbours and the local community throughout the duration of the project. Values that are all part of being a winning Master Builder. Well done CHI Homes!

Midlands Winner: Mister & Missus Ltd

bathroom project

Here, the judges recognised some of the challenges faced by this builder. For instance, they had to deal with a non-standard 1960 constructed extension with poor thermal insulation and little information on the rest of the existing structure. However, innovative use of unique carbon fibre stripping, upgrading of thermal performance, excellent client and neighbour relationship meant a fantastic overall modern result whilst still sympathetic to the original design of the property. Well done Mister & Missus, a well-deserved award!

Eastern Winner: R Lange Construction Ltd

bathroom project

Our judges were impressed by the mix of new and old here. Working in a small space and with access constraints, R Lange Construction had to cut these hand-made tiles to size with no margin for error. Retaining some of the original features such as the beams and mixing this will new and modern additions transformed what was a tired old bathroom into a tastefully designed and superbly executed project. Well done R Lange Construction!

New Home Projects

Midlands Winner: Three Pines Building Co Ltd

new home project

This attractive property was built closely following the vision of the architect. Not only was the brief to build the house but also a brick built shed was constructed for the bats to live in. These high quality new homes were built as development, complimenting the surrounding village, with sympathetic design and landscaping. Well done Three Pines Building Company Ltd.

Eastern Winner: Woodstone Homes Ltd

new home project

Woodstone homes built these two pairs of semis between December 2016 and January 2018. Planning changes and neighbour boundary issues were some of the challenges met during construction. However the end product produced a build that was sympathetic to an earlier barn conversion undertaken on nearby land, resulting in no environmental impact. A careful approach to energy use was also designed, including underfloor heating and solar panels. With all factors taken into consideration, the judges were unanimous in nominating this entry as an award winner. Well done WoodStone Homes!

Heritage Projects

South West Winner: Stonewood Builders Ltd

Heritage project

Stonewood’s work renovating a listed goods shed as part of a Local Authority and Community project also resonated strongly with our judges in the Heritage category. Bringing the building up to 21st century specification, including the installation of unobtrusive heating, ventilation and air conditioning was only one of the challenges. Increasing the building’s insulation, and successfully implementing a highly versatile interior whilst preserving the character of this listed building is a real achievement. Well done Stonewood Builders, you are a worthy winner!

Midlands Winner: Mister & Missus Ltd

heritage project

This entry was remarkable on so many levels. The judges were impressed at this company’s unassailable ability to resolve a whole range of challenges that only came to light during the works themselves. As works progressed, it was evident that the building had been previously badly altered, requiring Mr & Mrs to use innovative techniques and material combinations to overcome structural problems in this complex refurbishment project. The end result is a 19th Century three-storey townhouse that was nearly derelict, now brought back to its former glory with a sympathetic 21st century twist. Well done Mr & Mrs!

Eastern Winner: M J Parratt & Son Ltd

heritage project

This Grade II Listed building brought with it a number of conservational issues, with the building itself nearing collapse prior to the works commencing. The works included a new roof, using existing stone and special lime mortar. The old cobbled floor was uncovered and retained. All stone was re-used and the indoor areas of the building brought up to specification in terms of thermal performance. Well done M J Parratt & Son Ltd!

Commercial Projects

South West Winner: Thorn Homes Ltd

commercial project

Gloucestershire-based Thorn Homes took on this sizeable project which encompassed a diverse range of construction techniques both internal and external. Internally, many workplace-related aspects were incorporated in the design and Thorn Homes was closely involved throughout the design phase. The client commented upon the excellent working relationship which has since secured more work for Thorn Homes. Well done, Thorn Homes!

Midlands Winner: Rockingham Construction Limited

commercial project

This project required painstaking attention to detail, with Rockingham Construction working shorter hours to limit noise disturbance to neighbours, but also through the Christmas break to stay on-track. The judges noted the sympathetically introduced modern technology and insulation in to the existing building. Details such as external tiles using the client’s logo and very high standards of workmanship meant that this entry won the vote of our judges in this category. Well done Rockingham Construction Limited!

Eastern Winner: Modplan Building & Refurbishment

commercial project

Congratulations goes to Modplan Building & Refurbishment Contractors for this impressive heritage and visitor centre. The objective was to deliver a community hub with café, play area, education centre and office/meeting room space. The design incorporated a curved structure, with a flat roof but designed falls for aesthetics. Built with sustainable materials where possible and soft angular facades, the judges were unanimous in the decision to award Modplan Building & Refurbishment Contractors the winning nomination in this regional category. Well done Modplan!

Local Authority / Public Sector Projects

South West Winner: Stonewood Builders Ltd

public sector

This was a fascinating project which involved repurposing a disused goods shed in Tetbury, in Gloucestershire. Starting with the original shell of the building, the brief was to turn this into a multi-purpose community centre which includes foldable auditorium seating and an energy-efficient design. The project also attracted Royal interest from nearby Highgrove too!

Eastern Winner: Modplan Building & Refurbishment Contractors Ltd

public sector

Modplan’s brief was to deliver this £1.7M community hub with café, play area, education centre with offices as part of a joint commercial and local authority project. The judges recognised that the nature of this project scored exceptionally well across two distinct categories in these awards. The use of materials such as cedar cladding over a practical steel frame added to the unique aesthetics of this multi-purposed building. The judges also scored this entry highly on its environmental performance with attention given to ecology protection, ongoing waste management and energy conservation measures that will continue to make a positive impact through the entire life cycle of the building. Well done Modplan for such a deserving award.

Eastern Winner: John Goodman of J G Design & Build Ltd

heavenly builder

The judges scored highly on the client’s feedback here, stating the high level of professionalism from the start. A quite involved project, requiring demolition of some of the structure, replaced with a 2-storey extension. Throughout the build, this company communicated closely with client and neighbours. With any on-site issues being dealt with without any fuss. The finished project was delivered on time, with the client stating that they were extremely happy clients who can’t speak highly enough of J G Design & Build. Well done, a worthy winner!
