As if one national title wasn’t enough, Melbourne-based Alan Staley Building Contractor Ltd, celebrated multiple wins at the highlight anticipated Master Builder Awards 2017 hosted by the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) on Friday 15th September.
Alan Staley and his team won the national Large Renovation Project and best Heritage Project at a glittering awards ceremony held in London.
The awards were presented to the team following the significant restoration of The Dower House overlooking Melbourne Pool in Derbyshire. The project involved the demolition of a 1960’s wing and construction of several large extensions and extensive landscaping. Working closely with Adam Architecture, Alan Staley constructed bespoke stone carving details for the external elevations and installed a nautical themed parquet floor design, featuring a circular compass consisting of eight different timbers.
Alan explains further: “Working with a listed building requires a careful and sensitive approach to adapt the historic fabric and improve the environmental performance. Every aspect of this project required all works to be executed with precision.”
A combination of traditional materials, lime mortar, natural sandstone, oak and slate were sympathetically blended with the more modern materials of steel, glass and aluminium to create a high performance home for clients, Mr and Mrs Kerr.
However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing, with a number of unforeseen obstacles to contend with during construction. Alan adds: “As with many old buildings we uncovered numerous issues. The main problem was the condition of the roof coverings and roof structure with the slates delaminating and the wallplate decayed due to a beetle infestation.
“We then discovered decayed floor joists on the ground floor meaning the entire floor had to be lifted and new joists installed, including a new sub-floor to improve ventilation. We agreed to undertake the roof and floor works at cost due to the scale of works and financial implications.”
TV presenter and building enthusiast, Nick Knowles, presented the award to Alan Staley Building Contractor Ltd during the awards ceremony, held at the Intercontinental Park Lane Hotel in London.
Now in its 13th year, the Master Builder Awards continues to be a flagship for high-quality building work. Organised by the FMB, the awards programme is unique in that any project entered by the builder must be backed up by the customer – giving home owners the opportunity to support those building companies that have delivered exceptional results.
