In some important respects, the building industry in the UK remains heavily under-regulated. As such, the FMB believes it has an important role to play when it comes to driving up standards of workmanship and customer service in the industry. To achieve this, the FMB works closely with Trading Standards and other organisations to advice the general public on how to protect themselves against rogue and incompetent traders. However, we also believe that the industry needs a radical overhaul in the way it is regulated in order to permanently exclude the unprofessional outfits which continue to plague the industry, offer greater protection to consumers and drive up industry standards across the board.
Improving consumer protection
The FMB continuously lobbies for improved consumer protection to protect home owners from poor quality builders and tradespeople.
The FMB is leading on a campaign for licencing the UK construction industry, as we believe this will remove rogue and incompetent outfits from the industry that rip off clients with poor building services, and compromise health and safety on site. A licencing scheme will require all firms to register, and will give consumers the assurance they need that a firm has been checked and is compliant.
In addition, the FMB supports in principle the idea of a regulatory body which is there to support the needs of home owners and help ensure that the industry deals with complaints speedily and effectively.
Choosing and working with your builder
The FMB provides practical advice and support to the general public on choosing and working with the right builder. There are a number of simple steps that can be taken to help ensure a successful project.
