Building a new side extension at this house while reconfiguring the internal layout was the main priority at this property. However, in the process the clients were also keen to explore how to make the house more energy efficient and comfortable. So we insulated all of the groundfloor suspended floors, and although the existing cavity was too small for conventional cavity wall insulation we insulated walls & floors in the new extension above building regs standards and upgraded the insulation internally where we could. They also now have all new double glazed thermally broken aluminium frame windows, electric velux rooflights to help with natural passive ventilation, all new electrics and LED lights, a beautiful designer kitchen, all new floors, a new downstairs utility room with shower, and a fantastic blend of classic and contemporary to enjoy.

Regional finalist at the LABC Building Excellence Awards 2017. This "Highly Commended" accessible home project was undertaken for an artist who uses a wheelchair. She wanted to live in central Brighton in a house over multiple floors and chose this Victorian terrace. Our role, along with our architectural partner on this project, was to make the whole house accessible and also to increase the 'flow' of the building by creating more open spaces. To achieve this, we removed the stairs and created a void across four floors to accommodate a new lift. We demolished walls and opened up the space on the lower ground floor to make a large kitchen diner. Two new bathrooms, rainwater harvesting, improved insulation in the roof, refurbished sash windows and a completely new garden were also added. Background: Period/Age of House: 1850s No. Bedrooms: 2 No. other rooms: 4 No. of floors: 4 Floor Area: 126m² Wall type: Solid Heating & Hot Water: We installed a new Viessman Vitodens 200W boiler with built-in hot water storage, meaning that there is always sufficient hot water for showers to be running at the same time. We refurbished and re-sprayed the original cast iron radiators with TRVs so that the house is always warm and toasty (just as the client likes it!). Kitchen: The kitchen was made bespoke by Forge Creative to be accessible for the client, so that she can make the most of her passion for cooking. Bathrooms: Both bathrooms feature extremely striking marble tiling and both WCs are fed by a rainwater harvesting system to reduce water consumption. Lighting: The whole house was rewired and uses LED lights throughout. There are also a number of feature lights that were either made by our client (www.kylaharris.net) or purchased especially. Flooring: The decision was made to keep as much of the original flooring as possible (Reduce, ReUse, Recycle) and have them sanded down and srtianied and the effect is striking against the white recycled paint walls and the black stairs and railings.

Bright Green Homes LLP designed and project managed this Eco-renovation to create a beautiful home with a high specification finish. We reduced the property's overall CO2 emissions from 9 tonnes per annum to 2.5 tonnes per annum. The project involved three stages, with most of the work and refurbishment completed for Stage 1. Stage 2 was the installation of secondary glazing windows and doors (double glazed sash alternatives were a bit expensive at the time). Stage 3 involved the installation of a FIT capable solar PV system. Background: Period/Age of House: Regency – 1860s Type: Terraced No. Bedrooms: 3 No. other rooms: 5 No of floors: 2 Floor Area: 143m² Wall: mixed – cavity/solid/bungaroosh Energy Efficiency Measures: The renovation started with the fabric of the building. Roof skeilings have 50mm Celotex between rafters and 100mm under rafters, with an airtightness layer of Intello Plus and plasterboard and skim throughout. U value: 0.15W/m2K Roof space above kitchen has 300mm of Warmcell recycled newspaper insulation, and roof space above living room has 300mm of Earthwool recycled glass bottle insulation both chosen to overcome separate construction problems. U value: 0.14W/m2K External walls have a double skin of 50mm Celotex cross-battened to reduce thermal bridging over existing 40mm XPS which was retained to reduce waste: plasterboard and skim finish. U value: 0.19W/m2K Groundfloor retained the existing XPS insulation over slab, to reduce waste with 30mm added Celotex between battens to support new underfloor heating system. U value: 0.22W/m2K Separating floor has new suspended ceiling with 100mm of Earthwool acoustic insulation to reduce noise between floors and 30mm Celotex between joists above to form support for new underfloor heating system. Draughts: We carefully reduced draughts from existing windows and doors, with secondary glazing added to link to the installed airtightness barrier throughout the house. We also installed a Vent Axia – Sentinal Kinetic BH – a whole house heat recovery system with up to 92% efficiency and controlling condensation with trickle, boost, summer bypass and wireless controls. Heating & Hot Water: Under-floor heating throughout supplied by a Glowworm Flexicom high efficiency condensing system boiler. Large 250l Santon Premier Plus hot water cylinder with twin coils supplied by Kingspan Thermomax DF100 x 20 Panel on flat kitchen dormer. Which is estimated from SAP to produce 1128kWh of hot water per annum and is topped up from the gas boiler. Lighting: Increased natural light by providing an additional skylight and a Solartube for natural light in the converted studio. Low energy Megaman 11w GU10 bulbs throughout and 0.5W LED floor lights. LED strip lighting used in bathroom. Painting: Natural and Low VOC paints used throughout.

Bright Green Homes LLP were asked to help out when a project for this property had gone slightly wrong. We stepped in to construct a beautiful side extension for this terraced house in the fashionable Poets Corner area of Hove. We removed the side wall of the house (propping up the bathroom above) and inserted new steel columns to support the extension. We then added new foundations and a rear side wall, sloping roof and Velux windows with a large set of bifold doors to the rear, creating the luxurious space that this young family were looking for. We worked with the client to help out in the rest of the renovation work – but they project managed much of this themselves. Background: Period/Age of House: 1900s No. Bedrooms: 2 No. other rooms: 4 No. of floors: 2 Floor Area: 110m² Wall type: Solid Structural Works: Removing walls completely and supporting a house above it takes specialist skills and knowledge. Our client narrowly avoided disaster when they realised that their original builder simply wasn’t up to the task. Underfloor Heating: One luxurious item that the client wanted was underfloor heating in this new space. This involved a lot of soil being removed, the ground being taken down far enough to accommodate a solid sub base, sufficient insulation, and then a hot water underfloor heating system in screed. Finishes: We worked closely with the client to incorporate items that they wanted to organise for themselves and to work with other companies who were subcontracted directly by them.

Our clients had decided to complete most of the internal work themselves, but wanted Bright Green Homes LLP to help them with the rest of the (mainly external) works. We worked with them to achieve their wish list, including the installation of new heating and electrics and then a new garage, sunroom and facelift for their draughty 'mock Tudor' detached home. The work overall raised the house from a SAP rating of 47 (E) with predicted energy bills of £2,889/yr to a much less energy intensive 78 (C). This is a reduction of energy consumption by approximately 75% meaning that annual energy bills should decrease to approximately £1220/yr. Background: Period/Age of House: 1930s No. Bedrooms: 5 No. other rooms: 5 No. of floors: 3 Floor Area: 244m² (including the loft conversion) Wall type: Cavity Wall Details: New retaining wall around the rear of the garden, demolition and rebuild of 2-car wide garage with pitched roof to match the existing roof of the main house. Re-arranging drainage to accommodate the new position of bathroom and loft en-suite. The renovated sunroom roof was built as a flat cold roof with required airflow ready to accept an asphalt roof and decking above U value: 0.18W/m2K The original house was a cavity wall construction adding 50mm Cork insulation to the external masonry all covered externally with timber cladding to give the property a cool contemporary look in the style of ‘New Hampshire’ house. U value: 0.25W/m2K The sunroom walls and windows were upgraded to offer excellent insulating values in the winter and keeping the room cool in the summer. U value: 0.18W/m2K Windows & Doors: The new windows and doors that we installed throughout the house and extension were double glazed uPVC where new and refurbed elsewhere offering a contemporary look as well as B-Regulation performance. U value: 1.6W/m2K Heating & Hot Water: Heating upgraded with a high efficiency gas condensing boiler & a mega-flow cylinder, full zone controls throughout the house and secondary heating from a wood burning stove. Lighting: Lighting throughout supplied by Low Energy 11W LED lights. The first photo shows work in progress whilst rebuilding the garage and the second shows the end result.

“The dream that we had for years has surpassed our expectations – and you delivered. We can’t thank you and your team enough for the improvements, not only to our house, but to our lives and the way that we now live in our new surroundings.
Nearly every day, Ray or myself will say “I just love this room”; the space; the light; everything! Our friends and family still can’t believe when they visit, and see the transformation.
The journey with you, was made easier through your well organised planning and your help and advice along the way. [All those horror stories from friends and family – really were just their stories, and not ours]. Not saying it was a fairy tale – but it was definitely not as bad as we thought, and of course – we wish we had done it sooner. ”

The work was extensive, including the installation of a lift, an additional bathroom, new kitchen and rain water harvesting system. Throughout this process Alex and his team were incredibly organised, keeping me up to date with photos of the completed work every day.
I was consulted on as much as I needed to be, they were flexible with my requirements and gave me useful suggestions to any concerns. Not only were they a lovely bunch to work with, but they made the process of renovating and refurbishing a home a (relatively) stress-free process! I highly recommend them for any size of job and would not hesitate to work with them again… in fact, I count on it!

BGH carried out a garage extension in September 2016 providing us with 3 new bedrooms and a bathroom. Their quote was very competitive and they managed to keeps costs within the agreed budget (pretty impressive for a large project). Besides excellent communication and time-keeping, the guys were also exceptionally tidy and professional and offered brilliant advice throughout the job. We can not recommend them highly enough.
