Ark is a Brighton based building company that serves clients throughout East and West Sussex. We offer quality Design and Build services that merge classic craftsmanship with modern, 21st century practices, as well as some of the best customer service in the industry. We specialise in loft conversions, extensions, period renovations and refurbishments.

At Ark, we are committed to our philosophy of clear communication, quality of work, personal and professional excellence and a belief that good building and renovation can make a happy home. Our team of employees and colleagues were all chosen because they share these ideals and it's our wonderful team that make Ark exceptional. The expertise and camaraderie of our managers, builders, carpenters, decorators and office staff are the most important tools we bring to your project. We will take good care of your home as well as maintaining good relations with your neighbours, which we think is essential.

Throughout any project, transparency is always our number one rule and is needed to avoid the, sadly all too common, situation where the customers is disappointed, frustrated or paying more than they expected. We will provide you with a very detailed quote from the outset, itemised right down to last skirting board. This not only provides you with a shopping list of building details to choose from but also means that throughout the build it is very clear to both parties if something is additional to the quote or indeed if something has not been required and therefore should be omitted from the final bill.

At Ark we believe that all good businesses must be environmentally aware. We’re dedicated to finding ways of minimising our impact on the environment and use sustainable products and materials whenever possible. We think Green in our day-to-day practices, from the paper we use in our office to our principles on recycling and reusing materials on site., for example, is a great resource that we use to offer up your unwanted but useable items, such as an old kitchen or bathroom suite, to a new home, rather than heading for landfill. We employ Green Acre recycling services to collect and recycle all our building waste and we use sustainable timber in all aspects of construction. We’re also very open to talk to you about energy efficient building practices and specialist products and materials that can be used in your project.

Exterior/interior renovation and loft conversion

Our clients got in touch as they’d had a survey done on the front of their house and discovered that it needed structural work. They were very wary after having awful experiences with builders in the past, so we made as much effort to reassure them as possible.

Renovation of Victorian front façade and bay sash windows - The structural engineer reported that the front elevation had separated from the rest of the house, meaning that the whole face of the house had to be taken down. It turned out that the steels had rotted at the base and so the wooden windows had been holding up the front of the house! The project therefore involved meticulous rebuilding, matching in with the original pebble dashing and replacing individual bricks that had deteriorated. New hardwood sash windows were fabricated and installed along with the new steel work. Removing the front of the house meant the master bedroom and living room were open to the elements so Ark worked hard to minimise the stress and disruption to the family who continued to live in the property during the build. Ark’s decorating division then painted the exterior to a high finish.

Sussex loft conversion - Having rebuilt the clients trust in builders, Ark were then asked to design and build the a loft conversion. Working with the clients, we decided to incorporate a guest bedroom, en-suite and an office area Architectural drawings were produced and the final design approved.

This Brighton home was ideal for a dormer loft conversion and due to the high roof pitch had plenty of height for generous ceilings. There was enough space at the top of the stair landing for the office, as well as a large double bedroom. With the loft conversion completed the couple commissioned Ark to complete the transformation, with new skirting and architrave blending in with the rest of the property. The homeowners also commissioned bespoke fitted wardrobes into the eaves to maximise storage space in the new bedroom.

The en-suite bathroom proved a design challenge with its small proportions and sloping ceiling yet the clients still wanted designer touches. Loose fitted furniture was commissioned to maximise the available space and also give the couple exactly what they wanted. The striking lime green lacquer against the chocolaty tones of the dark wood works fantastically well – a real style statement with plenty of space for towels and toiletries. The clients chose a designer suite from Porcelanosa, which was then ordered and installed by Ark, and its sleek lines really give the wow factor. On a more practical level, under floor heating throughout negates the need for a radiator – an especially wise choice in small spaces.

Out on the hallway the beautiful winding staircase was continued all the way up to the new top floor, with square turned spindles, manufactured to match in with the rest of the house. The couple chose designer wallpaper from Cole and Son that has a powerful visual impact going up the height of the stairs.

LED down lighters were used throughout the conversion to give off a warm light. We recommend them for lofts as they need replacing very infrequently and as well as using a fraction of the electricity of other systems, they produce little heat. Again, this is ideal for lofts, which are prone to feel warm anyway, particularly in summer.

The rest of the house - The couple were now on a roll and looked to renovate other areas in their Brighton home. Ark were duly employed to makeover the family bathroom which involved a full rib out and installation of a new suite. The proportions of the room lent themselves nicely to having the bath boxed in and tiled all round with a discreet tiled access panel on the side. A large walk-in shower with a stylish low profile tray fitted snugly on the left hand side with a luxurious rainshower. The couple chose stunning handmade tiles from Winchester Tiles which have an amazing high gloss glaze and help make this small room feel light and elegant. Ark also installed under floor heating and a heated towel rail for maximum comfort.

After the front of the house had been renovated, the living room and bedroom needed attention. The front living room was stripped and re-plastered and the Artex ceiling skimmed over. Ark then installed a new fireplace and restored the chimney ready to take a real fire again. The room was decorated with Farrow and Ball paint and for a modern look we painted the doors and architrave in the same Drainpipe Grey as the walls. Designers Guild wallpaper in the alcoves completes the transformation and to finish the job, Ark’s decorating division painted and wallpapered the master bedroom, landing and hallways.

Renovation of flat in Grade 1 listed building

Our clients purchased this neglected flat in a Grade I listed building on Brighton seafront with a clear vision of restoring it to its former glory.

This couple wanted to make the most of the seafront and walk their dogs, and so saw the potential in this mistreated property. Their love of design made them a pleasure to work with and allowed for a strong focus on design and bespoke solutions.

ArchAngels Architects designed a contemporary living space with period features and a high-end spec. Ark set about removing walls and doors and replacing the garden window with French doors to maximise light throughout the flat. The open plan kitchen-dining-living space created for the couple is perfect for entertaining friends and family.

A defining feature of this project was the many bespoke items Ark created in collaboration with the homeowners, including their dream wardrobes based on an image they had found online, as well as meticulously made bespoke bedroom cupboards. The specialist cornicing fitted throughout adds character and period detail. Ark saved as many of the original floorboards as possible, sourcing additional ones to match to ensure a seamless finish once sanded. The original sash windows were refurbished and draft proofed.

For the bathroom, Ark gutted the old room and installed a state of the art suite including a luxurious walk-in shower with a chic low profile tray. Their decision to tile one wall in grey tiles transforms the room and provides a dramatic backdrop to the high-end suite. The precisely fitted metro wall tiles and Sussex floor tiles add a superb period feel to this modern bathroom. Ark also installed a heated towel rail for maximum comfort. To finish off Ark decorators painted the entire flat including the woodwork and windows.

Rear extension

The owners of this family home made a vast improvement on their property when they opted for an unusual rear extension instead of a disruptive house move.

Desperate for more space, the clients employed Ark to extend the ground floor and convert the garage to accommodate the changing needs of their family. With three teenagers and only one living room and a small kitchen, the house was becoming too cramped with no space for relaxation.

An open plan kitchen-diner with a second living room was the main request, as well as a separate study and hobby room. The property is located on an unusual corner plot, which led to the modern angular design of the extension. Always up for a challenge and interested in new approaches the Ark team thoroughly enjoyed working on this unusual extension. The results speak for themselves, the extension and seamless decking make a stunning imprint on the garden and a talking point at family BBQs.

Next the team moved indoors fitting the powder coat Aluminum bi-fold doors, matching large-scale window and two Velux windows to give the living room extra light. Under floor heating was fitted before the fired earth floor tiles went down throughout the ground floor. The bespoke oak dining table was designed by Ark joiners to make clever use of the space and echo the angular dimensions of the extension, resulting in several dining area options.

Ark carpenters fitted the kitchen and the aqua splash back, with pigment that was specially created based on a colour found by the client. The old garage was converted into the study. Ark joiners built a custom made shelf from reclaimed doors to store an impressive vinyl collection.

Side return extension/Renovation

The beautiful design and interior on this project was the result of a collaboration between Ark, Arior design and the clients. We transformed a part of the house that was small and dingy into a bright, modern space for any occasion.

The clients bought this large Victorian family home with the idea in mind of knocking through the kitchen and rear rooms into a large, open plan kitchen/dining area. They employed Architects from Arior Design who provide a design-focused refurbishment service. The Ark team were thrilled to work with Arior design to realise their clean, contemporary townhouse extension.

Ark’s first task was inserting the large steels to open up the back of the house before building the side return extension and knocking down several walls. We then installed three Velux windows as well as powder-coated Aluminium bifold doors, resulting in a room flooded with light. The bifold doors open out completely into the garden.

The clients asked for a modern kitchen perfect for cooking, dining and relaxing, allowing the family to spend time together in comfort. Ark fitted the entire kitchen including built-in appliances and contemporary tiles. The stunning stainless steel worktop was custom made, giving the room an ultra-modern feel. Our joiners fitted the bespoke oak wrap-round floating shelves in the cooking area. At the client's request we added a small downstairs en-suite bathroom with new suite, shower enclosure and tiles. To keep the family cosy, Ark installed under floor heating throughout the extension.

The final touches were added by Ark's decorating team, who painted the entire space in Farrow and Ball. The clients chose a dark grey feature wall which gives this family room an intimate atmosphere, while the bespoke floating oak shelves add warmth and texture.
