McKnight & Son is a family building firm, one of the longest running in Carlisle. The company was started in 1965 by Bob McKnight and celebrated its fiftieth year in business in 2015. We have an established reputation for quality of workmanship and for personal service. In the last few years, Wayne McKnight has taken over management of the business and has ensured that the business continues to thrive and diversify.

In 2013, our business headquarters moved into Junction Street. We renovated an old, derelict, electrical warehouse and transformed a dated office block into a modern space for our office, builders store and joinery workshop. The building incorporates some of the latest renewable energy systems, including PV panels and a BIOMASS boiler.

McKnight & Son's workforce comprises of around 30 craftsmen who all take great pride in their work, some of whom have working with Bob for almost 40 years. Many of the craftsmen are skilled in traditional building methods for use on old listed buildings, but are equally as trained in the latest techniques for modern builds.

The firm has a diverse range of clients and is happy to take on any work from small maintenance jobs to multi-million pound contracts. We are particularly proud of our flagship development, John Robert Gardens. We have also recently raised our profile through our involvement in the regeneration of Botchergate in Carlisle, and of the former Globe Public House.

McKnight & Son have built a substantial property portfolio with over 150 tenants in around 100 properties throughout Carlisle. From luxury Penthouse apartments to simple flats, McKnight have properties for all types of client.

Safety is always our number one priority and we are proud to say that we recently received accreditation from SAFEcontractor, a scheme which recognises very high standards of health and safety practice amongst UK contractors. The scheme is designed to help industry improve its safety record.

We offer an extensive list of services, including:

Joinery, brickwork, damp proofing, roofing, property structural works, plumbing & heating, flooring, electrical, decorating services, ground works, building maintenance, demolition, insurance works, listed building refurbishment and disability adaptation.

Case Studies

London Southend Airport

We worked in conjunction with Interior Connexions on a project for Stobart Air at London Southend Airport. We built new furniture and kitchens for the executive lounge, added new counters, and installed feature ceilings and LED lighting.

Stanley Hall, Carlisle

When McKnight & Son purchased Stanley Hall, there were 15 unoccupied flats with shop units underneath. Over six months, we converted these flats into student accommodation. There are now 26 rooms, providing an ideal environment for students to live and work in. We are very proud of the results.

The job involved: installing new shower rooms, new kitchens, energy efficient heating and lighting, a secure door entry system, on site laundry and safe bike storage. We also added a deck, giving students a nice space to sit outside. The work included the sympathetic restoration of the traditional Victorian shop frontages. The new shop fronts were manufactured in our workshop and installed by our Joinery team.

People First, Carlisle

As the main contractor for this project, our remit was to strip the original building down to a shell and then to create new offices, meeting rooms and staff welfare areas. The tradesmen we had on site were bricklayers, joiners, plumbers, electricians, decorators and flooring contractors. We were able to complete the job as a one stop solution and finished within the strict timetable.

House extension and renovation near Carlisle

Under instructions from a local architect, we performed the renovation and extension of this property near Carlisle. The project included extending the kitchen and installing a new en-suite bedroom and family bathroom. Additionally, the job included hard landscaping of the garage and garden area.
