Orchestrate Design and Build Ltd were regional winners of the Heritage Project category at the FMB London Master Builder Awards 2017.

The winning project was a daring conversion of Fulham’s Britannia Row Studios. Originally an industrial facility to service London taxis, for two decades the building was home to a recording studio at which some of the biggest names in rock history recorded including Björk, Kate Bush, Joy Division and, most famously, Pink Floyd. The conversion is both sympathetic to history and forward-looking with chic interior design. See the Case Studies tab for photos and more information.

Major renovation of two London flats, W6

Our client returned to the UK from China in search of a property which would give them the open-plan living space they had become accustomed to in East Asia.

Having kept their London flat whilst away, they bought the next door flat when it came up for sale and knocked through the dividing wall to create one open-plan residence.

The Orchestrate team undertook a magnificent renovation, removing the main party wall between the two properties to create a seamless open plan kitchen/diner, with plenty of light. A sliding glass-walled extension was incorporated to serve as the main dining area with the rear exterior of the two flats cleared and levelled to create an impressive double width garden.

Project highlights: The glass-walled extension with floating roof, double width open-plan living space, children’s climbing wall.

Duration: 30 weeks.

Worked with: Emma Farquharson (Design), SJ Associates (Engineering) and John Spaans (QS).

House renovation and internal rearrangement, London SW4

This property had previously undergone a renovation with a different contractor. The results highlighted the client's superb sense of interior design, but was not quite up to the standard that the client was hoping for.

Our brief was to completely remodel the ground floor by moving the kitchen and the downstairs toilet into the rear reception room, freeing up the old kitchen space for living space. We also removed the chimney breasts on the upper floors to create more usable space in the bedrooms and allow for integrated joinery.

Orchestrate worked closely with the client to integrate the new additions to the house with the existing design to great effect.

Project highlights: The entrance hall tiles, the WC squeezed into the ground floor, the brilliant use of the rear reception room to avoid dead space.

Duration: 18 weeks.

Renovation, BRITANNIA ROW, SW6 - Winner of best Heritage Project at the FMB London Master Builder Awards 2017

Working alongside former Pink Floyd studio manager and her musician husband, we transformed Britannia Row Studios into two unique industrial style flats.

The studio space comprised of a two-storey recording studio with live rooms, vocal booths, drum rooms and production suites. The new property, divided in two by a bespoke concrete staircase, boasts exposed brick walls throughout, with design remaining true to its rock and roll history.

The renovation involved stripping the 1 ft thick sound-proofed interior walls to the bare brick. Exposed pipes and concrete floors were restored and retained as part of the industrial look.

Project highlights: Exposed brick, exposed ducting, full heat recovery ventilation system, reclaimed sliding doors and bespoke cast concrete staircase.

Duration: 20 weeks

This project was featured in the Evening Standard and also won the regional award for best Heritage Project at the FMB London Master Builder Awards 2017. For more information about the Southern Counties & London awards, click here.
