In 2014, Mercury completed this conversion of a gymnasium at Teignmouth Community School into a new Sixth Form study centre and exam hall.
Works included the construction of a new first floor into the existing gym hall, providing an upstairs Exam Hall with acoustic separation from the rest of the building. On the ground floor, a new common area and kitchen were created, along with a large open-plan study area. We also added new offices, toilets and a meeting space.

Opened to staff and patients in September 2015, The Long House provides care and support to patients and their families coping with the impact of life-limiting illnesses. This sustainable facility, commissioned by North Devon Hospice, was funded through the generosity of the local community.
Our project team designed the building to be well-lit with natural daylight and engineered it to allow user control of ventilation whilst ensuring good energy performance with low running costs. Automatic low energy, high efficiency lighting was utilised in all areas, including daylight saving and occupancy sensors to provide energy savings.
The location of the site also provided a great opportunity to install photovoltaic (PV) panels which provide income via the Feed in Tariff and also offer a reduction in energy being used from the incoming electricity supply.
An air source heat pump was installed as the primary heat source for the building in addition to the wood burning stove in the social area, providing a cosy, homely feel.
We chose the materials from a small pallet of natural materials, carefully selected to ensure that the building remains sustainable whilst providing a holistic environment. Straw bales were used as a sustainable method for insulating the building, which was finished in a lime render.
The design set out to significantly improve on Building Regulation compliance limits and surpass targets. This has since been proven post construction by achieving a building air tightness score of 4.98m3/hr/m2. In addition, the building achieved an energy performance score of 14 (A rated).
For our work on this project, Mercury Construction won best Commercial Project at the FMB South West Master Builder Awards 2017. Read more about the Midland & South West awards here.
