The Southgate Road project, A House with a Lions Head, aimed to transform a lower ground floor and garden into a functional, cohesive, and inviting space that enhanced both everyday living and entertaining. Key objectives included reconfiguring the layout to optimise space, improve accessibility, and create seamless connections between the interior and exterior.

Moving the kitchen to the front of the lower ground floor and establishing a dining area at the rear closer to the garden were central to this transformation. A lowered patio was introduced to provide direct access to the redesigned garden, enhancing indoor-outdoor flow and usability.

The garden itself was reimagined as an extension of the home, featuring corten steel planters, a water feature, and clay pavers, all requiring precision workmanship. Additionally, bespoke joinery maximised storage and added a refined finish to the interiors.

Our award-winning project is a listed buildings in a stunning conservation area by the in Southwark. The new kitchen rear extension with a brick arch portico and a bespoke joinery element is a work of architectural art. With roof lanterns washing through the bespoke kitchen pantry joinery deep in the plan and a calm internalised courtyard, one always feels close to nature with this wonderfully unusual design. The brick arch portico to the rear harks to the nearby Soane church's historic details. The project was a design and build project and was taken through the whole process by Pencil and Brick.

Recently our project won the prestigious Federation of Master Builders Award 2023 for Large Renovation Project and Bathroom Project.

The project “A House with a Courtyard” in Southwark is a ground floor extension, rebuilt outrigger, with internal courtyard to a Victorian terrace and a general thorough refurb of the entire house. The extension provides a generous and bright kitchen and dining space for this growing family home. In this bathroom and WC we carried out all design, project management and build work, with exceptions being first pass of the tiling tiling, skimming, no plastered wall painting, and no wallpapering. We used a wide range of subcontractor individuals and companies to achieve the breadth and quality of this luscious scheme.

The client’s main aim was to create a highly individual bathroom, overflowing with character, and of a ‘magazine’ specification. Prestige in the art and craft of the build was paramount. For us, that is reflected in the craftsmanship of the construction, the project management and the joinery of the project.

The designs include enlarging the existing cellar to make a considerable basement for common family use, with double height space and slide connecting the kitchen and sunken living space. The designs also create a large rear extension for a kitchen and dining space, and renovating the upper floors for bedrooms and a study in the loft space.

The property is an end-of-terrace 3-storey [excluding undeveloped loft and basement] mid-Victorian house, built around 1866.
