In November 2015 we started a very interesting project in Ambleside, Cumbria. A five month project to renovate and complete the interior of this Grade 11 listed farmhouse which dates back to 1714. The house is Lakeland stone built with a part roughcast render finish externally, the views are spectacular as the property sits on a hillside overlooking the local town.
We have installed four new bathrooms, oak, limestone and York stone floors throughout and completed two kitchens, We have used reclaimed oak to the dining room and entrance hall, all the internal doors were made on site out of reclaimed oak by our specialist carpenters, finishing with blacksmith made thumb latches and strap hinges. All the oak beams were cleaned by hand and finished with beeswax, all skirting and architrave was specially made to suit the original template.

In September 2014 we were introduced to Mrs Karen Lewis by a mutual friend, at our first meeting Mrs Lewis asked if Tricklebank would be interested in building a new home for her, of course the answer was yes particularly as it was a traditional build with a contemporary edge and local to us.
Once everything was agreed and contracts were signed we started to clear the site in late November and early December 2014, the site itself was a garden plot in the grounds of Mrs Lewis’s previous home, quite a compact plot but nevertheless in a very desirable area of Freshfield, Formby.
Construction started in earnest in January 2015, foundations, drains, services, brickwork commenced out of the ground in February. The house itself is two and a half storey with the master bedroom, walk in wardrobes and en suite on the top floor, four further bedrooms, family bathroom, two en suites and large linen cupboard on the first floor and finally two reception rooms an internal porch, washroom, utility and open plan kitchen and breakfast room leading on to the garden via two pairs of bi fold doors.
Internally the house is very well appointed with traditional cornice, architrave and skirting boards matched neatly with oak doors throughout, contemporary bathrooms throughout using Aqualisa digital showers over wet rooms and slimline shower trays.
Externally all the windows are treated softwood, the doors are hardwood, both bay windows are topped using traditional lead work, made on site, the slates are reclaimed welsh blue, the chimney pot is also reclaimed, the rear outrigger is faced with cedar and topped with Sarnafil roofing membrane.
The house was completed two weeks over the due date due to delays on kitchen appliances and on budget, in all 36 weeks.

As we hear so much about ‘rogue builders’ and the damage they have then done to the reputation of more competent and honest builders, I would like to highlight the professionalism and high quality work of one of your members, Martin Silcock of Tricklebank who has completed the management of a successful project for me. It is people like Martin who through their openness, tenacity, passion, ‘client-focus’, attention to detail and hard work, are a shining example and a role model for how the industry should operate.
With previous builders I had got a long way into the major renovation and extension of my beautiful 17th century farm house in the Lake District. They were good technical builders but they were not ‘sympathetic’ to the ancient building and they did not have the competence to finish with quality and finesse. This first company became seriously delayed, spent all my funds and still left my house uninhabitable.
I worked hard for two years to raise funding to start building again but then discovered it was impossible to find other builders willing to take over the project to completion. I looked at your site without much hope - but was lucky to find Martin Silcock and Tricklebank!
Martin was willing to spend time listening and discussing with me by phone and then drove hours to visit me on site. He was positive, open and full of ideas to create a quality authentic finish. He stepped up to the challenge to complete my home when no one else would. His enthusiasm and attention to detail were infectious and he managed all the specialists with this great spirit. All the guys he employed were client-focused, polite and highly competent. There were many unexpected and often difficult problems to solve but Martin and his team were creative and determined to succeed. Martin proactively communicated; emailing me with photos to discuss decisions and progress. I always felt that he had my best interests in mind.

I heard about Tricklebank through a business acquaintance. After I had the first meeting with Martin I was impressed with his manner and approach to me, who was a little apprehensive about building a house to say the least. Martin reassured me and I signed up with Tricklebank.
From day one Martin kept me up to date and informed on each stage of the project. I found all of Martin’s team very helpful and polite, nothing was too much trouble. The site was always clean and tidy.
I would have no hesitation in recommending Tricklebank, Martin Silcock and his team. If I were ever to build a house again I would choose Tricklebank.
I would personally like to thank Martin and his team, you have all done me and my children proud. We have a fantastic home that we all love.
Thank you.

Tricklebank built and helped with the bespoke design of our beautiful family home in Churchtown in 2003. A home to suit our specific requirements. A four bedroom rustic country house with separate wing to accommodate our two severely disabled children.
The house consisted of beautiful oak floors and sandstone flagging with French Oak beams and bespoke open log fireplace. In beautiful surroundings.
Martin Silcock worked with our Architect in the design and paying particular attention to special loaded ceilings for hoist systems and special needs bathroom.
We were so pleased we chose Tricklebank for our house build the finish product was exceptional and nothing seemed to be too much trouble for Martin Silcock.
Thank you again for our beautiful home.
