Running a business and managing everything that goes with it can feel like you’re spinning plates at times. Throw in a financial downturn and things can become overwhelming. I wanted to reassure you that the survival of our members businesses is of the upmost importance to the London Board.

London Board meeting, October 2022

At our Board meeting in October, we discussed many ways we can improve our services to better support builders and ensure we not only survive this difficult period but ultimately thrive as a community. It’s by sticking together and sharing best practice that I think we can do this in the short term. Looking beyond that, firstly I think the FMB is in a unique position to connect us with clients and leads and there’s more we will be doing to enhance this service. But secondly, I believe our biggest strength is communication between members, whether that’s highlighting opportunities, sharing staff, materials, or just support, advice or expertise. Being part of the FMB is a way in which you should feel that you have the support of your fellow Master Builders in your region and beyond.

Skills shortages

On the subject of skills, many of you have expressed difficulty in finding skilled labour at a reasonable cost. The London Board have been working with educators and industry to understand how we can train the next generation, whether that’s led by business or education is something that needs to be addressed imminently in order that we can support the demand in the capital and continue to provide the high-quality work our Master Builders have been delivering for 80 years and beyond.

Master Builder Awards 2023

Finally, I wanted to bring to your attention that the Master Builder Award is now open for submissions and I believe there is no better to way to say to clients that your business provides the best service than winning an award with the FMB. Remember, all projects are welcome and there’s a wide range of categories from Small Renovations, Kitchens or even opportunities to celebrate your apprentice. Stay safe and I hope to see you all soon.

Kind regards
