York Builder Managing Director Clive Scotter said this build provided a chance to take on a unique and rewarding project. “We like the prospect of a challenge, and it was a chance for us to deliver something different to an everyday new build project,” he said. “It also gives us great personal satisfaction to be able to help provide the facilities to enable the client to be able to live a full life with her carers, in fabulous surroundings.”

The new home was to sit in the garden of an existing property that had access constraints at the side due to a shared-access driveway, and York Builder were quick off the mark in devising an effective solution. Breaking ground in September 2017, the FMB member coordinated efforts from sub-contractors responsible for home automation, specialist sanitaryware and lift installations, as well as a kitchen supplier.

Project works also included all hard landscaping works to create solid level access around the entire property. In addition, a pizza oven installed as a centrepiece in the garden is sure to be a hit for outdoor entertaining.

York Builder were also responsible for all on-site works, and comfortably beat their preliminary end-of-year deadline to be completely watertight. The new build also used high quality products in a bid to minimise future maintenance and ensure the longevity of the home for the client, with key products included:

  • Big-brands including Villeroy and Boch, and HansGrohe bathroomware
  • A custom staircase made using oak and glass
  • Marley Cedral external cladding
  • Hard landscaping features in the exterior comprised of composite decking and Indian stone paving

The project was handed to the client at the end of March 2018, receiving fantastic feedback from Building Control and all professional bodies involved.

In June 2018, York Builder also became a finalist at the LABC Building Excellence Awards for North & East Yorkshire for its work on building the accessible home. Commenting on this excellent achievement Clive Scotter said: “We were thrilled to reach the finals for the third year running with another great project and are aiming to make it to the finals again next year hopefully with several more projects.”

FMB North Director Caroline Meehan said it was always pleasing to hear of an FMB member’s involvement in specialist projects that make a difference to the lives of others.
