Government funding for a new green homes programme will help reduce carbon emissions from our existing housing stock, and move the country towards its legally binding net zero target, said the FMB today in response to an announcement by the Energy Minister, Kwasi Kwarteng MP.
Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), said: “Today’s investment in energy efficiency upgrades for our leaky housing stock is a positive signal from Government that it is keen to support the construction industry to recover economically from the coronavirus pandemic, and to reduce carbon emissions. It’s essential that local builders, who represent 99% of the construction industry, are at the heart of these upgrades, as they already have the key relationships with homeowners, will support local job and training opportunities, and help to deliver balanced economic growth that’s central to the Government’s ‘levelling-up’ agenda.”
Berry concluded: “While investing in green technology will promote innovation, it’s also important that we don’t overlook the need to adopt a holistic approach, incorporating upgrades to the fabric of building, including through insulation. This way will improve build quality and also reduce overall energy demand. We hope to see more from the Prime Minister tomorrow on how we can repair, repair, repair, as well as build, build, build our way to recovery.”
