As members know, local authorities (through each building standards team) are the sole verifiers of the building standards system in Scotland.

In recent years, FMB Scotland has engaged with Local Authority Building Standards Scotland (LABSS) who were keen to find out more about FMB members and the FMB’s vetting and independent inspection process.

Building Standards Futures Board

Through the FMB’s engagement with LABSS and the Building Standards Division, FMB Scotland Director Gordon Nelson was appointed onto the Building Standards Futures Board, which was set up in 2019.

What does this board do? Officially its remit is to help improve the performance, expertise, resilience and sustainability of the Scottish building standards framework and services across Scotland. There are a range of workstreams covering certification schemes, compliance and building warrant applications.

Current key priority projects that are being driven by the Board include the development of a new modern apprenticeship route for the building standards profession.

One recent output is the publication of new guidance on how to make a quality building warrant application in Scotland. It is a useful overview of the building standards system and was produced to support all applicants and agents when submitting a building warrant application.
