Door hardware can get overlooked in renovation or interior design projects. It’s sometimes seen as a mere detail, an afterthought even - and that’s a big mistake. Interior door hardware, door handles in particular, offers the opportunity for those building and renovation SMEs who know, to bring a sense of additional style and appeal to the built environment.

Door handles
For the right project, door handles are a really important element, and the right choice will resonate with the style and décor of a space, whether harmonising with it or in contrast to make a bolder statement.

Choosing the right door handles

A project may already be specified, especially with commercial jobs - but in some cases a customer might want advice about, or options for, which door handles to choose. In that case, being clued up about what door handles styles are on trend is valuable.

Here we explore four examples of timeless door handle styles, to hopefully offer door hardware inspiration for future building and renovation projects.

1. Quiet Luxury

Let’s begin with the classic, understated luxury of Georgian period style

The Georgian period spanned the early 18th to the early 19th century, and is characterised and influenced by neoclassical ideas, such as symmetry, and in the later period a sense of rococo grandeur.

2. Cool Utility

Next let’s look at some examples of handles that work best where simple utility is required. Victorian door handles can combine familiar designs with perhaps more unexpected, high quality finishes.

Door handles from the mid to late Victorian period used simpler elements, with more functional designs becoming fashionable.

Scroll and straight lever Victorian door handles and mortice knobs have persisted as design favourites, and their influence can be seen in modern door handles in more contemporary finishes, such as matte black, polished chrome or satin chrome, as seen above.

3. Earlier 20th Century Style

For a more modernist, decorative flare, the Art Deco movement has much to offer.

Door handles that feature geometric detailing fit well with Art Deco-style interiors.

With elements such as uncomplicated symmetry, knurled texturing and more contemporary finishes, including satin nickel, antique brass and matte black, this style is popular in both homes and commercial settings.

4.  Modern Minimalism

Design simplicity where form follows function, modern minimalism never seems to go off trend.

Black door handles in the minimalist style are particularly popular, with chrome door handles never dropping out of fashion either.

The minimalist door handles pictured here offer simple elegance, with clean lines and geometric curves. They work well in uncluttered, contemporary modern interiors that are often open plan spaces with larger windows and functional furniture.

Door Handles For Traders

For bigger jobs, door handles are often supplied in packs. Either multi packs of a single handle design, or installation packs that include latches, locks, hinges and fixings.
