Who can apply for FMB membership?

FMB membership is for sole traders and small and medium-sized construction companies based in the UK that have a 12-month trading history.

Call us on 0330 333 7777 (Monday to Friday, 9am - 5pm) or fill in our short online form to start the process. Or, if you have a few questions you'd like to ask first, you can request a call back online. A member of our team will then call you to find out more about your business and discuss if membership could work for you.

If you are not an SME builder but work in or with the SME builder sector and share the FMB’s aims of promoting quality and standards in the building industry we now offer FMB associateship. See Become an Associate member to find out more.

If you have a trading history of less than 12 months, contact us now and we'll get in touch again when you're eligible to apply. In the meantime, you can also sign up to our monthly email newsletter to receive regular industry insights and free downloadable resources.

How will my building business benefit from FMB membership?

Being an FMB member will help you stand out from the competition and will reassure clients of your credibility and commitment to high standards. Our business support services, supplier promotions and unlimited expert advice will help you save money, reclaim time, and influence the future of your industry. Find out more about FMB member benefits.

Unlike other organisations, the FMB’s badge of quality must be earned as you must first pass a strict vetting process and independent inspection of your work. This helps reassure clients of your commitment to quality and high standards.

But we're much more than an online directory. We can help you to achieve your goals, grow your business, and influence the future of your industry, while also helping you to save money and reclaim time. Find out more on how we make a difference. We're also a not-for-profit organisation, which means membership fees are reinvested into supporting you.

Our membership services are designed to be flexible to suit your business needs. If you have a broader support team, they can also be set up with access to our support services to help you get the most out of your membership. If you have a larger team of tradespeople, you can sign them up to our online learning portal to learn new skills or refresh their knowledge on topics such as asbestos awareness, waste management and more. Find out more about FMB member benefits.

What does the application process involve?

There are two stages to our application process:

1. Vetting process - we will carry out a range of checks including your trading history, credit history, and director checks for limited companies. We'll also ask you to provide us with copies of proof of your public liability insurance cover, and check out your trading history.

2. Inspection - if you pass the initial checks we will agree a time for an assessor to visit one of your sites to carry out an inspection of your work to check it meets high standards.

How long does the application process take?

Approximately 2-3 weeks.

Because of our commitment to quality and the need to undertake an inspection of your work, the join process can take between two to three weeks (subject to receiving the required application documentation from you).

As soon as your membership is activated, you can start using FMB business services. You'll be able to download contract templates, call the expert advice helplines, tune in to webinars, complete online training, set up your Find a Builder profile and much more.

You will also receive a welcome pack in the post with free FMB van stickers and the latest copy of Master Builder Magazine.

I'm not sure I want to join yet, can I speak to someone?

Yes! Our membership team are on hand Monday to Friday, 9am - 5pm on 0330 333 7777 to discuss if FMB membership would be suitable for you and your business. We will only recommend membership if we think you and your business would benefit from our services. You can also fill in the request a call back form at any time and we will call you back within one working day.

How much does FMB membership cost?

FMB membership costs £62.69 (+VAT) a month. For the first year only an inspection fee of £14.85 per month (+VAT) will also be applied to cover the cost of your initial inspection. Where payments are made on an annual basis, a one-off inspection fee of £178.20 (+VAT) will be applied when the first membership payment is made. FMB membership is also tax deductible.

You may pay monthly by direct debit or if you decide to pay on an annual basis you can pay by credit card, BACS or direct debit.

If you pay monthly, you won't be locked into any long-term commitments. Our friendly team is on hand to help advise you on how to get the most out of your membership, but if you decide it is just not for you, you can leave at any time.

There is no annual contract so if you find that membership is not for you then you can contact the team on 0330 333 7777 (Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm).  We are not able to offer pro-rata refunds on annual subscriptions if you decide to leave within twelve months of joining.
