JC Building Services were the North West winners of the 2019 Master Builder Awards for the category of Medium Renovation Project.
Project objectives
Outline plans were drawn up to extend and open up living / kitchen space by renovating the attached barn undercroft and adding a single storey extension. Our customers had a clear vision, to incorporate the natural beauty and styling of a traditional farm while simultaneously creating a modern, open space, flowing to enhance the 'indoor - outdoor' feeling. The look needed to appreciate Cumbrian stone and woodwork and make the most of the panoramic fell views.
Judges comments
Builder played a huge part in the design of this renovation, which was challenging due to ground water and other issues. Groundwater ingress was a serious concern, to create a dry space for the new rooms meant digging an 8ft drainage trench adjacent to the rear barn wall, and, in to 6ft of bedrock, to pipe the groundwater away before it reached the barn walls. Recycled material and reclaimed existing stone and timber, including using original beams to create mock lintels. Made the most of the amazing view.
