19th Century Conversion

Combe Down, Bath

A contemporary and characterful conversion of a 19th century stable, providing 2 bed residential accommodation over two floors. The design purposely retained as much of the existing masonry as possible, with two side flank elevations remaining largely unchanged from the exterior. The lead clad dormers reduce the visual impact on the roof, while providing much needed head room in the attic. The side extension was deliberately sympathetic to the existing building, using either reclaimed and locally sourced Bath stone.

This was a design and build contract where construction was undertaken in 6 months.

This stunning new build studio serves as a multi-functional self-contained annex to the existing house. It posed numerous technical difficulties, being partly built into the ground on this heavily sloping site which required a substantial retaining wall. The sloping roofs are GRP with a mock movement joint, the timber cladding used is Brimstone Poplar, a thermally modified and locally sourced British poplar and Anthracite Grey powder coated aluminium doors and windows.
Working alongside a local architect the construction stage was completed in just over 6 months.
