Our Scotland Director Gordon Nelson has been appointed as an industry co-chair of a Scottish Government-backed net-zero working group. This has come about through FMB’s campaigning at a UK-wide level on net-zero and the views some members have expressed about how to de-carbonise construction operations.

What is this working group all about?

The net-zero working group is one of 10 covering the 10 priority areas of the Scottish Construction Accord which was launched in October 2022. The 10 areas being:

  • Procurement/ Supply Chain Management
  • Pipeline
  • Workforce- Skills
  • Fair Work
  • Construction Quality
  • Digital
  • MMC
  • Net Zero
  • Supply Chain Development
  • Data

Gordon is an industry co-chair of the net-zero working group, with the Chair being Stephen Good of BE-ST. The high-level purpose of the Net Zero working group is about:

“Driving a just transition to being net-zero in embodied carbon, industry operations and over asset life cycles.”

All of the Chairs and Co-Chairs of the 10 working groups are part of the Transformation Board. Gordon can explain more about what this board is about and the governance arrangements. However for now, the net-zero group is having discussions with key stakeholders to identify areas of focus and action and map out what others are doing to avoid duplication of effort. There will be overlaps with other working groups: especially the workforce-skills group.

FMB Scotland President Alastair Raitt said “It’s no surprise that once again, the FMB has been sought out to assist the Scottish Government and the wider construction industry in a key area. I know that looking after your own business comes first but if any members across Scotland would like to find out more and support Gordon on this net-zero group, just get in touch.”
