We collaborated with the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) to create a new guide Becoming a small housing developer: advice and guidance from others in the new homes industry designed to help those starting out as small housing builders, or looking to do so, to become successful businesses. The guide was the idea of Chris Carr, of Cleethorpes-based Carr & Carr (Builders) Limited, President of the Federation of Master Builders and Chair of the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) SME Housing Subgroup.

House building is rewarding work and new entrants to the industry are vital as they bring new ideas and refresh the lifeblood of the sector. However, new house builders face a significant learning curve in understanding and negotiating the many elements, processes and rules involved in development. With small developers responsible for only 10% of new build homes today compared to 40% in the 1980s, the FMB wants to support more aspiring developers to enter the industry.

Many that contributed to this guide wish they had access to it when they themselves were starting out. The guide aims to provide practical and accessible advice and information to help steer your business through the development process.
