Noticing the headline of a local Birmingham newspaper yesterday and reading The Sun article about cowboy builders taking advantage of elderly people and delivering substandard work was both infuriating and heart-breaking for me. As an advocate for the FMB and its member firms, I've had the privilege of interacting with builders who take immense pride in their work. To see homeowners being deceived and left with shoddy work is a stark reminder of why I'm so passionate about what I do.

Through the eyes of genuine builders

The FMB is an organisation run for members by members. Most of our members join the FMB to differentiate themselves from the very kind of rogue traders highlighted in The Sun story. They invest in their skills, uphold the highest standards, and genuinely care about the homes and spaces they create. Every time I hear a story like this, I can't help but think of the countless genuine builders whose reputations are inadvertently tarnished.

Every negative story casts a shadow over our industry, making homeowners wary and sceptical. It's disheartening to think that dedicated builders, who have spent years mastering their craft, might be viewed with suspicion because of the actions of a few unscrupulous individuals.

The urgent need for change

The lack of regulation in the UK's construction industry has allowed such rogue traders to thrive. While other trades, such as gas and electrical contractors, are regulated, our genuine builders are left battling the negative perceptions created by a minority who are not subject to any kind of vetting or oversight.

This is why the FMB's campaign for a licensing scheme resonates deeply with me. A licensing scheme would:

  • Differentiate genuine builders from rogue traders.
  • Elevate the standards of the construction industry.
  • Provide homeowners with the assurance they rightfully deserve.

As an advocate for the FMB and its member firms, I stand firmly behind our campaign for change. I urge everyone to support the push for a licensing scheme. It's not just about elevating industry standards; it's about restoring trust and pride in what our builders do.

To our dedicated builders, I see your commitment and passion every day. To homeowners, please know that there are many builders out there who are committed to delivering nothing but the best. Together, we can reshape the narrative and ensure a brighter future for the UK construction industry.
