Front cover of FMB report Licence to build

The UK construction industry still seeks a comprehensive solution to the problem of ensuring competence.

As things stand, many would argue that too few builders and contractors are subject to meaningful checks and balances. This is because, unlike the gas and electrical trades, anyone in the UK can set themselves up as a builder or tradesperson.

The research report looks at the potential benefits of introducing a mandatory licencing scheme for UK construction, and what this could look like in operation.

We believe a mandatory licencing scheme would help to increase quality and standards across the whole industry. The report sets out a possible structure for what its implementation could look like, and how it could build on existing quality assurance frameworks that operate in the industry in order to minimise disruption and additional cost.
