Gavin McGuire presents at the Building Mental Health Alliance (BMHA) conference, October 2023

Simone McAllister and I attended the first Building Mental Health Alliance (BMHA) two-day conference in Omagh last week. It was terrific to see 170 delegates attend and hear of the work undertaken by the FMB and our industry. I presented to the packed room on the startling statistics and challenges associated with mental health and providing help and support to the construction industry.

The BMHA is a collaboration of construction organisations (including the FMB) who have come together to launch an initiative aimed at improving the mental health of all workers in the industry.

It was also great to have a number of FMB members join us including Nickell & RichmondLowry Building & Civil Engineering Ltd and McKelvey Construction Ltd for this great event.

How was this initiative received by the attendees?

There was an incredibly positive response to this signposting service. One comment from an attendee spoke for many who we met:

‘Many congratulations to you and your team of presenters for an exceptionally informative and illuminating ‘conference’ / launch today. The BMHA initiative and in particular Mental Health in Construction Signposting via QR code is arguably the most positive addition to employee wellbeing in Northern Ireland’s construction industry that I have seen in my 40 odd years in the sector.’

We encourage everyone to use these resources, to support yourselves, colleagues and families in the time ahead.

What help is available?

FMB staff in NI have been reaching out with site visits and health packs to all members who would welcome one. Why not contact the office if you would like us to call on-site with you?
