George Stone Limited started life as George Stone (Folkestone) Limited in 1933. In 1942 the Company extended its operations to the Hastings area acquiring Adams & Jarrett Limited in 1944. In 1956 George Stone (Hastings) Limited was officially formed.
The Company was bought by Durrant Brothers in 1980 who unfortunately went out of business in the early 1990’s. George Stone was saved from this downfall by John Christie Limited the owners of Glyndebourne Productions and have enjoyed a continuous and stable trading history in St. Leonards on Sea ever since.
In 2003 the Company changed its name to George Stone Limited and underwent a change of branding. With this re-brand came a focus on new initiatives i.e. Investors in People which continue to strengthen the Company today.
The early George Stone Limited was a major Building Contractor and was responsible for several housing developments in the Hastings and St. Leonards area. Today the Company concentrates on its strengths being anything from Small Works for Local Authorities up to Contracts for private Clients worth £500000.
We currently undertake all maintenance for East Sussex County Council within a 15 mile radius and work closely with several Architects who use us as a preferred Contractor.
The Company specialise in refurbishment alterations extensions and renovations. We employ 9 full time and 2 part time staff in the office and 30 full time staff on site on a PAYE basis. All main trades are covered including carpentry bricklaying painting/decorating plastering and roofing although we use Sub-Contractors for electrical and plumbing works.
One of the key objectives of George Stone is to promote the Construction industry as a whole. It is a well know fact within the business that in 10/15 years time there will be a severe shortage of skilled tradesmen unless something is done about it now.
The Company has a comprehensive and thorough training programme which is open to all members of staff and there are currently 3 Apprentices undertaking NVQ’s at various levels in carpentry bricklaying and painting/decorating.
Our commitment to training has helped us to gain the Investors in People standard and also brought recognition to the Company when we won the Sussex Business Awards – Learning Pays Category sponsored by the Sussex Learning & Skills Council.
