Mitsubishi Ecodan air source heat pumps review

In this review, we delve into the Mitsubishi Ecodan air source heat pumps’ specs, price and benefits so you can make a decision about whether it’s the right heating solution for your home.

Mitsubishi is a Japanese multinational corporation well-known for its cars, but its subsidiary Mitsubishi Electric is a global leader in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) industry.

The Ecodan range is Mitsubishi’s flagship range of air source heat pumps. The heat pumps, which are manufactured in the UK, are available in several models and outputs. In this review, we focus on the Ecodan R290 air source heat pump, which is a monobloc pump available in 5kW, 6kw, 8.5kW, 10kW and 12kW.

Technical information

There are several heat pumps in the Ecodan Monobloc range. The Ecodan R290 air source heat pump is an innovative and efficient heating solution. As its name implies, it uses R290 refrigerant, which has a very low Global Warming Potential (GWP), reducing its impact on the environment. This refrigerant also allows the Ecodan heat pump to operate in colder conditions down to -25°C.

The range of heat pumps was extended in April 2025 to include larger, more powerful models, which means users can now choose between 5kw, 6kW, 8.5kW, 10kW and 12kW models depending on the size of their homes. All of them have an energy efficiency rating of up to A+++ for heating at 35°C.

Mitsubishi Ecodan heat pumps system are inverter-controlled, meaning they use an inverter and compression technology to maintain the exact temperature desired at all times. When the demand for heating increases, the inverter speeds up its cycles to circulate more heat through the home.

How do Mitsubishi Ecodan Monobloc air source heat pumps compare to other heat pumps?

While the Ecodan range has been updated to include more powerful models, it still doesn’t come close the Vaillant flexoTHERM + aroCOLLECT in terms of power output.

For smaller homes and flats which might not be able to accommodate several large units, the Kensa Shoebox is a very compact ground source heat pump.

How much does the Mitsubishi Ecodan Monobloc air source heat pump cost?

The Mitsubishi Ecodan range is among the most affordable of the heat pumps we’ve reviewed, coming in between £3,800 and £5,800 for the unit, but you’ll also have to pay for a cylinder, which will increase the price. Compared to the likes of Vaillant or NIBE, for which you can expect to pay upwards of £8,000 for the unit alone, we think this is a very reasonable price tag.

Customer reviews

As of October 2025, Mitsubishi Electric UK is rated an impressive 4.3 stars out of 5 on Trustpilot, making it an “Excellent” company by the platform’s standards. Most negative reviews highlight difficulties getting in touch with support from Mitsubishi, and issues with scheduling annual services, for example.

“Excellent annual service by Steve and Richard. Friendly and very competent, tidy and knowledgeable pair. This is after a previous year’s annual service by Dean, who was quite exemplary. The EcoDan system is now over 5 years old and working very well.”

“Mitsubishi were helpful with initial installer problems but fail to offer prompt regular servicing after year of purchase. I always try to book a service 6-8 weeks in advance of annual service to secure warranty, yet each year I have to constantly pester.
After complaining and escalating I have paid in full, online, for an annual service yet still haven’t been given a date. As online advance payment for service is the only way of paying I consider this failure to deliver very poor practice. I am moving and wish to keep green but will factor in poor after sales when choosing next ASHP.”

“I reported a fault on my system to Mitsubishi on 27th May. After many phone calls, an engineer called on 8th July to assess the job. He said the expansion tank needed replacing and he would order the parts – which would take a couple of weeks to come in. On 17th July I was told that the order was still awaiting authorisation. On 10th September I was told that the authorisation had still not been given. The call centre staff have promised on many occasions to call back to keep me updated. Those calls have not been forthcoming. It is worth noting that I have been paying for their 3 Diamond Service package since 2021. This claims to offer a “priority callout” response.”

Our recommendation

Mitsubishi’s Ecodan heat pumps are innovative, efficient and powerful. The range of outputs available means most households can find a model suitable to their needs, as does the relatively affordable price tag. These pumps can operate in very cold temperatures and use a more environmentally-friendly refrigerant than some competitors.

Methodology

We considered several factors when reviewing the Mitsubishi Ecodan air source heat pump, including the following weighted criteria: design (20 per cent), durability (20 per cent), efficiency (25 per cent), performance (25 per cent), and guarantee options (10 per cent). We also compared the Ecodan with some of the best outdoor heating systems and heat pumps in the UK in terms of both performance and price.
