Technical information

The NIBE S1256 is an inverter-controlled ground source heat pump, meaning an inverter and compressor work together to adjust its output according to the heating or cooling needs of your home. Basically, it intelligently adjusts its how much energy or heat it produces based on the temperature inside your home, allowing you to save energy and money.

The heat pump comes with integrated Wi-Fi capabilities and can be used in conjunction with wireless accessories to seamlessly integrate into your smart home. For example, you can add the NIBE RMU S40 to your unit, which is a temperature and humidity sensor with a sleek touch display, or the NIBE SRV 10 which is a wireless smart radiator thermostat.

NIBE reckons the heat pump is suitable for homes up to 400 square metres, both new builds and retrofits, so it’s suited to most households provided their budget stretches to it.

How much does the NIBE S1256 cost?

NIBE’s ground source heat pumps are on the premium end of the market, and while prices are not displayed on the manufacturer’s website, our research indicates you can expect to pay between £8,000-£12,000 for the NIBE S1256 heat pump.

Customer reviews

As of October 2025, NIBE is rated 3.7 stars out of 5 on Trustpilot from over 400 reviews. Most of the negative reviews are about UpLink and connectivity features rather than the heat pumps themselves.

“The heat pump itself has been working great. The connectivity is not working right now, and I don’t like the app.”

“MyUplink is useless, new MyUplink app system looks good but provides no useful info. We need to know the heating supply/return temp and brine in/out temp. These features were in the old app. But are not available now or charged for. We should be able to chose any 4 indicators plus their history. If NIBE want to make money let users choose the data they want to see.”

Our recommendation

The NIBE S1256 is one of the most innovative and energy efficient ground source heat pump on the market, with a power output suitable to heat larger homes. Its connectivity and quiet running are just some of the reasons we’d recommend it to any household whose budget stretches to meet the high price tag it comes with. That said, the upfront cost of £8,000-£12,000 means it may be out of reach for some. If that’s the case, we’d recommend taking a look at the Kensa Shoebox, which has a smaller size and power output but performs extremely well.
