Summary

Fleming Buildings are a construction company based in Kirkintilloch, near Glasgow, and were established nearly 55 years ago. We are expert builders specialising in timber frame engineering. As a family business, we benefit from being a strong, close-knit unit, sharing our values of wisdom, experience, loyalty, accountability, inclusion and respect with the wider Fleming family (by that we mean our employees). As a result, early half of our 80 strong workforce have been with us for more than 15 years.

Everyone at Fleming Buildings works together to ensure that projects run smoothly and are completed to the highest standard. This includes management, the in-house design team and those out on the job - site managers, foremen, bricklayers, joiners and labourers.

Our business has grown over the years, not only in terms of staff and clients, but also in terms of the range of work we undertake. Furthermore, we have always been committed to giving opportunities to young people, investing not only in their future but also in the building trade.  At the moment we have a total of eight apprentice joiners.

Timber Frame Engineering: We’ve been using timber for more than half a century. Demand for wooden infrastructure is still very high and we have the level of craftsmanship and know-how to create your perfect wooden build. From hospitals to schools to care homes to churches, our design and manufacturing teams create a wide range of bespoke timber engineered structures.

Using timber instead of concrete, masonry or steel means we can manufacture almost the whole structure off-site at our own factory, a huge advantage in Scotland particularly given our climate and the needs and demands to have projects completed on programme and to budget.

Furthermore, the expertise and options that we can offer and the benefits of timber frame construction means we design buildings that are more cost-effective and energy efficient.  Indeed, we believe in sustainability with all our materials sourced from our certified supply chain. For every tree removed, another three are planted.

Contracting: We are the primary contractors on a number of building projects throughout Scotland at any one time. We work across many sectors including health, education, community and residential. Our teams can manage the whole process from early concept stage to practical completion, making things as easy for the client as possible.

Cost certainty and quality are of prime importance to us. Health and safety, environmental impact and community support are also at the forefront of what we do. Community involvement takes many different forms such as working with local schools and colleges. Additionally, we look for opportunities to train young people in the local area and use local suppliers and subcontractors where possible.

Environment: We take the environmental impact of our work very seriously and we encourage our customers, suppliers and indeed all business associates to do the same. We make sure to take the following measures to reduce our impact on the environment:

  • minimise our waste and reuse or recycle as much of it as possible
  • minimise energy and water use in our buildings, vehicles and processes
  • source materials from local suppliers where appropriate to reduce carbon footprint
  • use timber sources that ensure that for every tree that is removed, three are planted
  • We are an ISO 14001 accredited company - an internationally accepted standard for effective environmental management.

Case Studies

Education - East Park School

27/09/2017

East Park is a school that provides education to children and young people with additional support needs.

We constructed two new purpose-built, independent residential units, together with a classroom block. Additionally, we reconfigured the car park and carried out landscaping work.

The project was carried out on time and within budget. We are pleased to say that our careful coordination minimised disruption to the ongoing operation of the school.

Community - Inverkip Community Hub

27/09/2017

Fleming Buildings constructed this new build single-storey community hub, containing a library and other facilities linked to a multifunction sports and community hall.

We also constructed a children’s play area, all-weather pitch with floodlighting, car parking and hard and soft landscaping.

Religious - Milton of Campsie Parish Church

27/09/2017

Fleming Buildings constructed the new Church of Scotland in Milton of Campsie on the site of, and incorporating, the existing church hall. A new auditorium, cafe and meeting rooms were also added.

We installed an air source heat pump to reduce the cost and carbon footprint of the building. The church scored triple A - the highest installation rating possible - in an independent assessment.

Religious - Kelvinside Hillhead Parish Church, Glasgow

27/09/2017

Work to this stunning Grade A listed building involved stripping off existing slates to the roof including towers and fleche, replacing leadwork and reslating.

Repairs to stonework were also carried out on this conservation project as well as repointing and replacement of gutters and downpipes.

Health - Edinburgh Royal Infirmary

27/09/2017

Our Timber Engineering Division undertook this prestigious project for Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, which involved the creation of one of the largest timber-framed commercial buildings in Scotland.

Fleming Buildings were closely involved with the Managing Contractor from an early stage and were responsible for the design, manufacture and erection of the structure and roof cassettes in a phased programme of works.

Restoration - Hawkhead Village

27/09/2017

Hawkhead restoration project involved the refurbishment of four grade A and B listed buildings to create privately owned flats. The two-storey buildings required full and extensive restoration structurally, internally and externally to bring them back to their original state.

Flemings worked with the design team throughout the various stages of build and project aims and objectives were achieved by successful collaborative working.
